Nouns that refer to just one in
number are called singular
nouns. On the other hand, nouns
that refer to more than one in
number are called plural nouns.

Here are the rules to guide you in
changing nouns to plural form.
1. We add s to the end of the noun to
form its plural
Examples:
bird birds
teacher - teachers
elephant - elephants
giraffe giraffes
snake - snakes
lion lions
2. We add es to nouns that end
in s, sh, x, ch, and z
Examples:
fox- foxes
bus - buses
3. For nouns ending in y
preceded by a consonant, we
change y to i and ad es
Examples:
dragonfly dragonflies
firefly fireflies
4. For nouns ending in o, we add s
or es
Examples:
kangaroo kangaroos
potato potatoes
gecko geckos
tomato tomatoes
some nouns ending in o may be
added with s or es like mango-
mangoes, mangos and volcano
volcanoes, volcano
5. Some nouns change their spelling
to form their plural. We call them
irregular nouns.
Examples:
man men foot - feet
woman women louse - lice
child children tooth - teeth
mouse mice ox - oxen
goose geese
