Extensive literature survey
Once the problem is formulated, a brief summary of
it should be written down. Then the researcher
should undertake extensive literature survey
connected with the problem. For this purpose,
The abstracting

Indexing journals

Published or unpublished bibliographies are the


first place to go to. Secondly,
Academic journals

Conference proceedings

Government and nor government reports, books


etc., must be tapped depending on the nature of
the problem.
The review of Literature performs
five important functions
It provides the conceptual or theoretical framework
of the planned research,
It provides the researcher with the information
about past researches related to his intended study,
It gives the investigator a feeling of confidence
since by means of the review of related literature he
will have on hand all concepts related to his study,
It gives the researcher information about the
research methods used, the population and
sampling considered,
It provides findings and conclusions of past
investigations which the researchers may relate to
his own findings.
Kinds: Related Literature

There are two kinds of related literature:


Research Literature

Conceptual Literature

Research Literature refers to publish reports of


actual research studies done previously.
Conceptual literature consists of articles or books
written by authorities giving their opinions,
experiences, theories or ideas of what is good and
bad, desirable and undesirable within the problem
area.
Guide to use in the review of related
Literature
In conducting a review of related literature, the
researcher should make suitable use of a number of
guides, which are typically available in the more
respectable libraries. These guide may grouped into
several categories, following the classification are:

Comprehensive or general guides,


Guides to periodicals and serials,

Guides to books and monographs,

Guides to graduate theses,

Guides to special educational areas and problems,.


Guide to use in the review of related
Literature

Continuing or serial bibliographies and


summaries in the limited areas of education,

Extensive individual bibliographies and


summaries in limited areas of education, and

Biographical, institutional, and statistical


directories and handbooks in education.
How to compile a reference

1st: Authors or editors name and (at least)


initials
2nd: Year of published
3rd: Brief title of the article
4th: Brief title of the periodical in which the
article appeared
5th: Volume number (Issue number) and
6th: Page number
