MAIN IDEA

Every paragraph has a main idea.

The main idea tells you what the paragraph is about.

The main idea is the most important part of a paragraph.

SUPPORTING DETAILS

The supporting details are the things that describe the


main idea.

These supporting details make the main idea stronger.


Find the main idea and supporting details of the
passage

The Erie Canal changed the way people moved


goods in the 1800s. The 363 mile canal
connected Albany, New York to Lake Erie in
Buffalo for the first time. When the Canal
opened in 1825, building supplies and goods
could be transported quickly and cheaply across
New York State. Canal boats pulled by mules
carried people and supplies across New York.
Main Idea: Lake Erie changed the way
people moved goods.

Supporting Details:
1-The 363 mile canal connected Albany and
New York for the first time.
2-The canal boats pulled by mules carried
people and supplies across New York State.
3-The canal made a way for goods to be
transported cheaply and quickly.
Inferencing,
predicting and
drawing conclusion

Prediction :
- a prediction is what you think will happen based upon the text.

Inference :
- similar to prediction but not the same
- inference is reading all the clues and making your best guess.
- when inferring, you are using all the clues to draw conclusion about
what us being read

Draw conclusion :
- a conclusion is a sensible decision you take based on details or facts
in a story or article.
When you draw a conclusion you
use 2 things:

What you know in your head.


and
What youve read in the story.

A conclusion is the decision you come


to when you put these two together.
SEQUENCING

identification of the components of a story,


such as the beginning, middle, and end.

retell the events within a given text in order


CAUSE AND EFFECT

Cause : is a reason why something happened.

Effect : is something that happens because of


something else.
STEPS TO FINDING THE CAUSE AND EFFECT

1. Effect : Think about what happened.

2. Cause : Ask yourself, Why did this happen?


SYNTHESIZING

includes summarize, conclude, infer, and


generalize,

and when you read some more, you may


incorporate the new information with the text
you read before
evaluating

Evaluation is when a reader decides what they


like or do not like about what they have read.

Evaluation is the readers chance to assess the


book or text.
