Preamble

English language is the most



widespread language in the world
today.
English is being used as primary
language worldwide in international
affairs, business markets and
academic circles.
In many world countries of the
world the official language is
English, as Canada, Australia, India,
USA, Hong Kong, South African
Republic.
The most of the words we use today,
come with basic settings on English
and we accept them so naturally.
Britain probably has more famous
writers than any other country, their
works spanning every period of
history and many literary styles.
Geoffrey Chaucer


Was British poet, philosopher,
courtier, soldier and diplomat in
Medieval.
His most important work The
Canterbury Tales, collection of 24
stories. Only 2 were written in
prose, other 22 written in verse.
Most important works: The Book
of Duchess, The House of Fame,
The Legend of Good Women and
Troilus and Criseyde.
The Canterbury Tales


Chaucer described pilgrims group
and its voyage.
They were on the way to give
respect to the grave of the St.
Thomas.
The pilgrims come from all the
layers of the society.
They gathered at the Tabard inn
near London.
They had a deal, that who tells
better story could get a free meal.
It is believed that Chaucer
described his own pilgrimage that
he went on around 1387.
William Shakespeare


English poet and playwrite.
He is the owner of 38 plays, 154
sonnets, and several poems.
At age of 18, he married Anne
Hathaway, who bore him three
children, Suzan and twins, Hamlet
and Judith.
Began very successful career in
London as an actor.
He was co-owner of playing
company The Lord Chamberlains
Men.
He died in 1613 in Stratford.
Shakespeares opus

Most of his opus, Shakespeare wrote in between 1590 and 1613.

He wrote comedies, tragedies, history based stories.

His most famous works, considered as best written in English


are plays as Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet.
ROMEO AND JULIET

The play which is set in Verona


is a story about a long feud
between the Montague and
Capulet families. This feud
causes tragic results for the
main characters in the
play, Romeo and Juliet.

HAMLET

Prince Hamlet is depressed.


Having been summoned home
to Denmark from school in
Germany to attend his father's
funeral, he is shocked to find
his mother Gertrude already
remarried. The Queen has wed
Hamlet's Uncle Claudius, the
dead king's brother. To Hamlet,
the marriage is "foul incest."
Jane Austen


She was born in Steventon.
Thanks to her sister, today we have
the only portrait of Jane Austen that
is kept in museum in London.
She got her primary Education at
School for girls, first at Oxford and
than in Southampton.
She published her first story in 1789.
She refused the only offer of
marriage that we know she
received.
Today its believed that she had
Addison`s disease.
Jane Austen had to travel to
Winchester for medical care where
she died 2 months later, on July 18.
1817.
Jane Austin never signed a novel with her full name, she always
used synonyms.

She was a writer of love novels.

Her most popular novels among readers are: Sense and


Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park.
Charlotte and Emily Bronte
Charlotte and Emily were two of six children in Bronthad.
Their father served mess as catholic priest.
Their mother died out of cancer in 1821.
They were sent to the Daughters school 1824.
Influences by their fathers library, especially by Walter Scott and Lord Byrons
books, started writing their fictional stories.
Charlotte Bronte


Charlotte wrote her first story about a country
called Angria.
In period of 1831 1832, Charlotte continued
her education at Roe Head School.
After she lost of her entire family, Charlotte
kept writing and published four books,
todays classic, Jane Eyre in 1947, Shirley in
1849, Villette 1853 and Professor in 1857.
The Professor was her first novel, but it was
rejected by many publishes back then and
printed after she died.
She got married to Arthur Bell Nicholls,
which was her fathers curate.
Charlotte died during her first pregnancy.
Emily Bronte

Emily, together with Anne, wrote


a story about Gondal.
Emily worked at Miss Patchett's
Ladies Academy as governess as
well.
In 1842, they applied for a job in
Brussels, but they had to return
home, because their aunt, who
took care of the family, has died.
In 1847. Emily published her only
novel, Wuthering Heights.
After she past away, she was
buried at the St. Michaels Church,
with her stuffed animal, monkey
Dave.
Charles Dickens

Most significant writer of 19th


century.
At age of 11, his father was
arrested because of the debt and
Charles had to work 10 hours a
day in a factory.
He worked as journalist.
Dickens edited a journal for 20
years and wrote 15 novels and
hundred short stories.
In 1857, Dickens, at age of 45, fell
in love with a much younger, 18
year old actress, Ellen Ternan and
divorced his wife a year later.
Charles Dickens had a stroke in
June 8, 1870, while working on
Edwin Drood.
He was buried at Westminster
Abbey.

His first work got published,



Sketches by Boz, a collection of
short stories.
In 1838, he wrote Oliver Twist,
that had a child as its main
character.
He published his Christmas
themed stories, A Christmas
Carol in 1843, The Chimes in
1844 and The Cricket on the
Hearthin 1845. In period 1846
1848, he worked on Dombey and
Sonand David Copperfield,
(1849 1850) which he considered
as his best work.
Agatha Christie

Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller, was born


on September 15, 1890.
Her mother kept Agatha home and
taught her how to read and write.
During World War I, she worked as a
nurse.
After the war, she worked at hospitals
pharmacy which had a great influence
on her future work because most of
the murders she wrote about in her
novel, were committed by poison.
After divorce from Archibald Christie,
she showed a great interest for
archeology, and married an
archeologist, Max Mallowan,
She died on January 12, 1976 at her
home in Wallingford, near Oxford, at
age of 86.
Agatha Christie


In her stories, she described Her most famous works
places she lived at or visited are:The Murder of Roger
at some point. Ackroyd (1926), Peril at End
Her first novel she House (1932), Murder on the
