Introduction

Polyvinyl chloride commonly abbreviated PVC is

the third most widely produced plastic, after
polyethylene and polypropylene.

PVC is vinyl chloride polimer. It is a thermoplastic

made of 57% chlorine and 43% carbon.

7. Strong and light weight
Properties of PVC

Chemical properties
PVC has an amorphous structure with polar chlorine
atoms in the molecular structure whilst olefin plastics have
only carbon and hydrogen atoms in their molecular
structures. So in terms of performance and functions, it is
more chemically stable when compared to other general
purpose plastics.
Physical and Mechanical
Properties of PVC

Properties Physical properties

oGlass transition temperature: 85oC.
oMelting temperature: 240oC.
oAmorphous density at 25oC: 1.385 g/cm3.
oCrystalline density at 25oC: 1.52 g/cm3.
oMolecular weight of repeat unit: 62.50 g/mol.

Mechanical properties
Properties of PVC

Thermal Properties
PVC (uncrystallized) has a vitreous transition
temperature lying between 75 and 80C, i.e. at
ambient temperature it is rigid and above 90C it is
rubbery (low resistance, high distortion).

PVC decomposes in a flame (250-320C), releasing

gaseous chlorohydric acid, but it is self-extinguishing.

Electrical Properties
PVC has good insulating properties but the electrical
losses in the material are sufficiently high so as to permit
high-frequency welding.
PVC Process

Polymerization methods of VCM:

1. Solution polymerization
2. Bulk polymerization
3. Emulsion polymerization
PVC Process

Berikut merupakan proses pembuatan Polivinil

klorida menggunakan cara polimerisasi suspensi, yaitu :
Mula-mula monomer vinil klorida dan air diintroduksikan
ke reaktor dan inisiator polimerisasi, bersamaan dengan
menginisiasi reaksi bahan tambahan.
Kandungan pada wadah dicampur terus, untuk
mempertahankan suspensi dan memastikan keseragaman
ukuran partikel resin PVC.
Reaksinya secara eksotermik dan membutuhkan
mekanisme pendinginan untuk mempertahankan reaktor
pada temperatur yang dibutuhkan.
PVC Process
butiran PVC

Nb : pada operasi normal kelebihan monomer vinil klorida pada

PVC sekitar 1 ppm.
Application of PVC

PVC yang dihasilkan dapat memberikan

manfaat, diantarannya :
Pipe
Insulation or electrical cables
Footwear
Raincoat
Table, chair, cupboard
Vinyl record
Part of body car
Roof tile
