DEFINITION
Environmental Degradation is a
process through which the natural
environment is compromised in some
way, reducing biological diversity
and the general health of the
environment. This process can be
entirely natural in origin or it can be
accelerated or caused by human activities. Many
international organizations recognize
environmental degradation as one of the major
threats facing the planet.
Types of Environmental Degradation
Deforestation

Desertification

Extinction

Erosion

Emission
DEFORESTATION
DESERTIFICATION
EXTINCTION
EROSION
EMISSION
The Decline in quantity and quality of soil
It includes
Erosion by wind and water
Biological degradation (loss of humus)
Physical degradation (loss of structure, permeability,
compaction)
Chemical degradation (reduced fertility, salinisation, changing
pH, toxicity)

If Degradation is so severe that land becomes unusable it is

termed desertification
Managing Soil
Degradation
The main thing is to allow for
increased cover.
To improve the structure of the soil
by better farming methods e.g.
mulching, organic.
Must reduce overland flow and
increase infiltration.
Provide physical barriers to wind
e.g. windbreaks.
Mechanical methods e.g. building
terraces, contour ploughing, stone
lines,
Cropping techniques: crop rotation,
keeping stubble, intercropping
with vetiver or other crops.
Managing salinised soils flushing
soil. Use of drip irrigation.

LAND POLLUTION
Land pollution is the degradation of Earth's
land surfaces often caused by human
activities and their misuse of land resources.
It occurs when waste is not disposed
properly. Health hazard disposal of urban and
industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals,
and improper use of soil by inadequate
agricultural practices are a few factors.
Urbanization and industrialization are major
causes of land pollution.

Conclusion

It is essential to make the public aware of the

formidable consequences of the Environmental
Degradation, if not retorted and reformative
measures undertaken, would result in the extinction
of life. We are facing various environmental
challenges. It is essential to get the country
acquainted with these challenges so that their acts
may be eco-friendly.
