Rainwater harvesting is a
technique of collection
and storage of rainwater
into natural reservoirs or
tanks, or the infiltration of
surface water into
subsurface aquifers
(before it is lost as surface
runoff)
Types of Rainwater
harvesting
Broadly there are two ways
of harvesting rainwater:
(i) Surface runoff
harvesting
(ii) Roof top rainwater
harvesting
Surface runoff harvesting
In urban area rainwater flows
away as surface runoff. This
runoff could be caught and
used for recharging aquifers
by adopting appropriate
methods.
Uses
Rainwater harvesting makes use of a
natural resource and reduces flooding,
storm water runoff, erosion, and
contamination of surface water with
pesticides, sediment, metals, and fertilizers
in controlling soil erosion
Rainwater harvesting helps in reduction of
soil erosion due to reduced surface water
runoff.
