Objective
Inthis project to control and designed for a three-
phase voltage source converter (VSC) acting as a
static synchronous compensator to provide power
factor compensation

The design ensures asymptotic tracking of phase

voltage parameters and also a new control method
for suppressing the harmonics.

Need for power factor correction

To reduce currents in equipments

To minimise losses
Capacity of various equipment increases
To increase efficiency
Improves voltage regulation
Require smaller conductor size

POWER FACTOR AND NON-LINEAR LOADS

Non-linear loads, such as rectifier circuits, dont

typically shift the current waveform, instead they
distort it.
These distorted waveforms can be broken down into
harmonic components using Fourier Analysis.
The harmonic currents produce no useful work and
therefore are reactive in nature..
Examples include, variable speed drives, computers,
broadcasting equipment, compact fluorescent and
LED lighting, electrical chargers, induction furnaces
and many other devices.

STATCOM
It is a power electronic device forced
commutated devices like IGBT, GTO etc. to
control the reactive power flow through a power
network.

The function of STATCOM is similar to that of

synchronous condenser.

STATCOM supplies both capacitive and reactive

currents similar to that of synchronous
condenser.

Components of STATCOM
Voltage Source Converter
The voltage-source converter is used to convert the
DC input voltage to an AC output voltage.
PWM technique is used in IGBT
DC Capacitor
DC Capacitor is used to supply constant DC voltage to
the voltage source converter, VSC
Inductive Reactance
A Transformer is connected between the output of VSC
and Power System. Transformer basically acts as a
coupling medium. Transformer neutralize harmonics
contained in the square waves produced by VSC.

Fuzzy control
a mathematical system that analyzes analog input
values in terms of logical variables that take on
continuous values between 0 and 1.

In classical or digital logic which operates on

discrete values of either 1 or 0 (true or false).

Every thing is a matter of degree.

FUZZIFICATION AND DEFUZZIFICATION

FUZZIFICATION
The process of and transforming input values crisp input
values into linguistic values is called Fuzzification.

De- Fuzzification
Process of converting fuzzy values into crisp values
1. Max membership methods
2. Centroid method
3. Weighted average method

19-Oct-17 13
Fuzzy logic inputs
Linguistic variable
A variable whose values are words or sentences in
natural languages .
Where in this project Linguistic variables are error
and change in error.
Linguistic values are NL,NM,NS,EZ,PL,PM,PS.
fuzzy maps the variables to the equivalent crisp value.

19-Oct-17 14
Fuzzy logic rules
A fuzzy rule can be defined as a conditional
statement in the form:
IF x is A THEN y is B
Where x and y are linguistic variables; and
A and B are linguistic values.
Ex:
1. If (error is NL) and (change in error is NL) then
(output signal is NL)
2. If (error is NM) and (change in error is NL) then
(output signal is NL)

Conclusion
The power factor correction process is achieved
without employing any complicated control logic.
It Presents an fuzzy control of a VSC used as a
STATCOM for power factor compensation.
The performance of the fuzzy control is compared
with a adaptive PI control in simulation, it is
nearly 0.786 and while using, fuzzy controller
acquiring 0.999 PF that is nearly unity power
factor.
