Definition of Distribution Automation System (DAS)

The most straightforward definition of DAS is-

Ability of local & remote access to the distribution

system.
Consists manual & automatic functions.
Consists communication links & interfaces to the
measurement system and/or the switchgear objects
within the substation and to the Network Control &
Management Center (NCMC/NCC).
Basic Functions of DAS-
Function Typical Examples of Functions
Monitoring of switchgear status, transformer tap position &
tap changer status etc.
Monitoring Monitoring of control & protection equipment soundness.
Functions Monitoring of electrical quantities, e.g. current, voltage,
frequency, MW, MVAR etc.
Monitoring of station auxiliary supply and DC system.
Controlling of circuit breakers & disconnecting switches.
opening & closing.
Control Synchronization checking.
Functions Maintaining switchgear operational interlocking.
Controlling of voltage regulation.
Controlling of reactive power.
Recording Recording of monitoring data.
Functions Fault, disturbance and event recording.
Protection of generator, transmission line, power transformer,

Functions
reactor etc.
Major Benefits of DAS-
To measure, protection control and monitor the components which are
remotely located.
To integrate all substations within a circle and all such components
which are remotely located outside the substation for performance
analysis.
To make the fault detection and automatic isolation.
To integrate automatic meter reading to avoid manipulation and loss of
revenue by integrating DAS with Automatic Billing and Collection
Centre.
To maintain load shedding schedule automatically.
To monitor network topology and network components (assets) using
GIS (Geographical Information System).
To increase overall efficiency, reliability.
To make operation and maintenance easy.
To save the time gap between a trouble call by a customer and actual
service by integrating DA and Trouble Call Management.
Basic Components of Distribution Automation System:

1. Master Distribution Automation Software

2. Engineering analysis software
3. Data Acquisition and Control Hardware like RTU,
Relays, Digital Multifunction Meters, Remote Tap

Communication in DAS-

Communication between the switchyard equipments to

IEDs and communication between local DAS to network
control centers are the backbone of modern DAS.

Proper & flexible communications is the key feature to

achieve the perfect score and reliability for DAS.
