Felix Hoffmann, a 29-year-old chemist

from Bayer, commissioned by the
company's new drug director, Arthur
Elchengrn, was looking for a less toxic
variant of Frdric's salicylic acid when
he found what would be the 'magic'
solution for a wide variety of
discomforts. On August 10, 1897, he
noted in his laboratory notebook that
he had succeeded in producing pure
acetylsalicylic acid, a substance which
would later be known as aspirin.
