LAPAROSCOPIC PROCEDURE

&
GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST

BY: JESCIRELLE J. UBANAN

WHAT IS LAPAROSCOPY

is a way of performing a surgery. Instead of

making a large incision (or cut) for certain
operations, surgeons make tiny incisions and
insert thin instruments and a camera into an
area, such as into the abdomen, to view the
internal organs and repair or remove tissue.
used to examine the organs inside the
abdomen.
- Laparoscopy is often used to identify and
diagnose the source of pelvic or abdominal
pain.

- Laparoscopy is usually done as an outpatient

procedure. This means that youll be able to go
home the same day as your surgery. It may be
performed in a hospital or an outpatient
surgical center.
DOCTOR MAY RECOMMEND LAPAROSCOPY TO
EXAMINE THE FOLLOWING ORGANS:

appendix
gallbladder
liver
pancreas
small intestine and large intestine (colon)
spleen
stomach
pelvic or reproductive organs
RISKS OF LAPAROSCOPY
The most common risks associated
with laparoscopy are bleeding ,
infection, and damage to organs in
your abdomen.
Other organs might be punctured

*tell the doctor if you are pregnant

HOW TO PREPARE FOR LAPAROSCOPY

Before laparoscopy, your doctor may order

blood tests, urinalysis, electrocardiogram (EKG
or ECG, and chest x-ray. Your doctor might also
perform certain imaging tests, including an
ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI scan.
HOW DOES LAPAROSCOPY PERFORMED

The surgeon makes an incision below your belly

button, and then inserts a small tube called a
cannula. The cannula is used to inflate your
abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. This gas
allows your doctor to see your abdominal
organs more clearly.
HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO TO
ENSURE A SMOOTHER RECOVERY:
Begin light activity as soon as youre able, in
order to reduce your risk of blood clots.
Get more sleep than you normally do.

Use throat lozenges to ease the pain of a sore

throat
Wear loose-fitting clothes.
NORMAL RESULTS FROM LAPAROSCOPY
INDICATE THE ABSENCE OF:

abdominal bleeding
hernias, and

intestinal blockages.

* Also indicates healthy organ

ABNORMAL RESULTS FROM LAPAROSCOPY
INDICATE CERTAIN CONDITIONS, INCLUDING:

adhesions or surgical scars

hernias

appendicitis , an inflammation of the intestines

fibroids , or abnormal growths in the uterus

cysts or tumors

cancer
WHAT IS GTT?

A glucose tolerance test checks how well the

body processes blood sugar (glucose). It
involves comparing the levels of glucose in the
blood before and after drinking a sugary drink.
RISKS OF GTT

These tests have no serious risks. If theyre

testing you for gestational diabetes, this test
has no associated serious risks for you or your
baby. Breaking the skin barrier can slightly
increase your risk of infection. Watch for signs
of infection, such as redness and swelling
around the puncture site, and fever.
WHY IS THIS TEST PERFORMED?

This test is commonly used to diagnose

medical conditions where the body cannot use
glucose properly, such as pre-diabetes (where
blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high
enough for diabetes), diabetes, and gestational
diabetes. It also helps determine if you have
another condition that affects blood glucose
levels
For the days leading up to the test you should
eat a normal diet without restricting what you
eat. The night before the test your doctor may
ask you to stop eating 8-12 hours before you
are due to have the test. You will usually be
allowed to drink water but may be asked to
avoid sugary drinks.

HEMOGLOBIN A1C (HBA1C) TESTING

In conjunction with glucose tolerance testing

(GTT), another useful indicator for the diagnosis
and monitoring of diabetes mellitus
includes hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) testing. Its
value, measured in percentage of all
Hemoglobin, is used as an indicator of the
serum glucose value over the last 3-4 months.
