How we are using big data to increase human productivity

There is a few years since
the term big data became the new technological
hype, mostly because of NSA system of world
surveilance and Wikileaks scandal, but in
computation science the use of statistics
methods to make a pattern analisys isn’t
something new. It’s important to make clear that
the objective of this paper isn’t to defend the
use of spying methods by governments
agencies or companies that offers “free”
services but in reality they are selling our
personal data to other companies .
1) It’s all coldly calculated
To plan a factory production
isn’t a easy task, mainly if you want to use
some lean manufacturing principles, so in order
to make it possible it’s avaliable a few tools that
use historic data of past tasks timing reports
and allocates human and machine capital
where it’s needed, with a good analisis it’s even
possible to identify the bottleneck process and
solve it to increase your plant production
capability. There is a lot of companhies that
offers this kind of software, a few exemples are
the german SAP, the american IBM and the
brazilian TOTVS, all this softwares are know for
being expensive but there is avaliable too
solutions made from small software houses that
are far more afordable.
since them they had to analise it by hand or
using primitive software technology. A few
companies are solving this problem using big
data analisys and pointing hot zones where
crimes may occur in the next hours, mostly of
the softwares avaliable uses just two
information about past crimes: where and when
they did it happend. The numbers are really
promising, the Memphis P.D affirms that violent
crimes reduced 15% after using IBM
technology, Reading P.D uses a PredPol
algorithm and in the last 14 months the number
of thefts decreased 23% even with less cops.
Isn’t that hard to make a parallel to the movie
Minority Report, but the real world algorithms
don’t use personal data to predict crimes, so we
don’t know who is the delinquent, or how he
looks like, we just know that happened crimes
in certain regions and that propability of more
crimes happens there is certain.
