Where do you see yourself?
Why strong provider-student relationships
are crucial

• Shape the way children think and act

• Students feel positive
• More willing to work hard
• Large and positive impact on students’ academic results
• Greater results than socio-economic status & professional
development
High-Performance Relationships

• Real and lasting difference

• One of the most powerful things you can do
Element 1: Productive relationships

Show genuine care

• Warm – accept your students for who they are and care for them as
good parents cares for their child

• Empathy – understand how your students think and feel about what
is going on around them

• Time – take time to physically and mentally present when talking with
your students
Element 1: Productive relationships

Your beliefs care critical

• Children need guidance and structure
• All children can and should behave well
• All children can and should improve how well they do at school/site
• Improvement comes from hard work
• Some students will need more support than others to meet your
standards
Element 1: Productive relationships

Relational Styles
Two essential elements for high-performance relationships
CARE & PRESSURE

• Effective relationships are found by those who care about their kids,
while also pressing them to do well.
Relational Styles
Authoritarian – high press and low
care

Friendly – high care and low press

Aloof – low press and low care

High-performance – care for

students while simultaneously
pressing them to excellence
Holding high standards without providing a warm environment is
merely harsh. A warm environment without high standards lacks
backbone. But if you can create a combination of high standards with a
warm and supportive environment it will benefit all students, not just
the high achievers.
