Protest and Reform
 The 16th century movement to REFORM Catholic Church.
 It was led by Martin Luther
 Went from studying the law to becoming a monk. He was sent to the University
of Wittenberg.
 In 1517 he wrote his “95 These” and nailed them to the door of a Church in
Wittenberg, Germany.
 “Priesthood was a human invention, Christians did not need Priests to receive
the grace of God.
 “Salvation comes through faith, not good works.”
 His biggest complaint had to do with indulgences
 Indulgences were a “get out of jail free card” that could be bought and sold from
the Church. It would cost ½ years wage.
 The Church set out to kill Martin Luther before his words spread, but
thanks to the invention of the printing press in 1450, his words spread
faster than the Pope’s army.
 People who agree with Luther were known as Protestants, because they
PROTESTED the Catholic Church.
 Before the reformation all Christians were Roman Catholic.
 During the middle ages the role of the Church was
dominant.
 The Church took care of peoples souls
 Most people in Europe only met one person who could read
the Bible, which was only written in Latin, and that was the
Priest.
 The Priest had many roles in the Church: Confessional,
Baptism, Marrying, Last Rights, Orphanages, Provided
Education, Gave to the Poor.
 All of this was undone by Martin Luther and the
Reformation
 With the invention of the printing press, Luther’s publications
could reach millions of people.
 His most revolutionary publication was writing the Bible in
German, so common people could read it. They no longer
needed to go to the Priest.
 Martin Luther’s break away from the Church led to many
different spin offs. (Denominations)
 The new denominations led to chaos, murder and war.
 The reformation led to wider European literacy.
 It forced governments to grant religious freedom.
 Counter-Reformation
 The Pope kicked Martin Luther out of the Catholic
Church forever. Known as excommunication.
 At the Diet of Worms, the Catholic Church tried to
make Martin Luther decant (take back) his 95 Theses.
 Formed the Council of Trent, which lasted 18 years, to
try and fix the issues raised by Martin Luther.
 Denied Luther’s ideas of “faith alone”, and reaffirmed
the ideas of salvation through good works.
 Reaffirmed purgatory and the importance of
indulgences.
 England was part of the Roman Catholic Church.
 His wife, Catherine did not bear him a Son. Just a
daughter named Mary, who would be known as
“Bloody Mary”. He wanted an annulment, but the Pope
would not grant it to him.
 In 1533 Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic
Church and married the pregnant Anne Boleyn in a
secret ceremony.
 Once the Pope found out, he excommunicated Henry
VII and England. This was the start of the English
Reformation.
 Henry VIII was the founder of Anglicanism. The Church of
England.
 His personal beliefs remained catholic, even though there were
many people at court and in the nation who adopted
Protestantism.
 Anne Boleyn gave birth to a daughter, named Elizabeth, who
would become Elizabeth I.
 Upon failing to provide Henry VIII with a son, he made false
accusations of adultery against Anne Boleyn and had her
beheaded at a public execution.
 Henry VIII would go through six wives before he finally had a son
named Edward. Edward died when he was 16.
