Why should we have activities
accompanying a video file?
To encourage imagination, prediction skills for
a speaking / writing activity;
To improve students’ listening and speaking
skills;
To motivate students: a refreshing learning
experience;
To provide contextualized linguistic, authentic
cross-cultural information, classroom listening
comprehension and fluency practice;
To expose S to different native speaker voices,

Brainstorming (with film trailers );
Watching and answering questions;
Watching and choosing the right answers;
Turning off sound and asking students to create a
dialogue from a scene;
Getting one part of the class to watch and describe
to the others;

Using a freeze frame technique (pause when it
gets very interesting, then ask your students a
number of questions about what happens next);

Considerations

 It is important to ensure the suitability, length, clarity,


and completeness of the videotaped material. The ideal
video clip tells a complete story or section of a story.

 They should also be timely and deliver a clear message


to enhance classroom discussion.
Lesson Plan & Classroom Process
3 parts: pre-viewing, while viewing, and post-viewing
activities
 Pre-viewing: engage S’s interest in what they will be
doing; prepare them to do it successfully.
While-viewing: observe Sts’ reactions and see what they
do not understand, what they are intrigued by, and what
bothers them.
Post-viewing: review and clarify complex points,
encourage discussion, explain, and assign follow-up
activities.

Reflections

Videos can provide interesting activities for using the


target language and updating knowledge in a relaxing
way.

Besides, they can motivate Ss to watch more films at


home, and thus encourages extensive learning of the
language.

Ideally, videos should be introduced in class during


summer vacation or upon national holidays.
