INTRODUCTION

 Watermelon is a sweet fruit of


exquisite flavor, always
appetizing and refreshing. It
receives different names
depending the country, for
example: water melon, pin,
aguamelón, síndria, pepón or
cíndria. In English it is called
watermelon, and its scientific
name is Citrullus lanatus.

Watermelon
 Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a plant species in the
family Cucurbitaceae, a vine-like (scrambler) flowering
plant originally from sub-Saharan Africa. It is cultivated
for its fruit. The subdivision of this species into two
varieties, watermelons (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) var.
lanatus) and citron melons (Citrullus lanatus var.
citroides (L. H. Bailey) Mansf.), originated with the
erroneous synonymization of Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.)
Matsum. & Nakai and Citrullus vulgaris Schrad. by
L.H.Bailey in 1930.
Cultivation

 Watermelons are tropical or


subtropical plants and need
temperatures higher than about 25
°C (77 °F) to thrive. On a garden
scale, seeds are usually sown in
pots under cover and transplanted
into well-drained sandy loam with a
pH between 5.5 and 7, and medium
levels of nitrogen.
Nutritional properties

 It is one of the fruits that contains


more water, more than 90% of its
weight. This is one of the reasons,
among others, so it is recommended
for people who are on a diet to lose
weight. But, in addition, it has other
elements that make it suitable for the
human body. It contains minerals,
vitamins, fiber, practically no fat and
carbohydrates.
