SACRAMENT OF EUCHARIST
YEAR 4 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
PRAYER Sign of the cross
Lord, give us the wisdom and the courage to help our children as you would
to develop in them a Christ-like love for all people …
To nurture in them a desire to give and not simply to take …
to teach them to be doers of Your Holy Word.
Guide us in our parental responsibilities strengthen our love as a family
so that we may work together in coming closer to You.
May we be the expression of Your love to our children
so that each day will be as today …
Your love received and shared …
to help us be one in the Body of Christ.
Amen

OUR GOALS FOR YOUR CHILD
1. Experience the Sacrament of the Eucharist as an action in which we give
thanks and praise, receive Jesus, remember His life, death and resurrection
and are sent to be Christ to others.

2. Identify the roles of priest, deacon, choir, lectors, and the community
(assembly) in our Eucharistic Celebration.

3. Identify the two parts of the Eucharist (Mass): Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of
the Eucharist

4. To explore promises that we make to God, connecting them to daily actions.

THE SACRAMENT OF EUCHARIST
◦ The Sacrament of the Eucharist is seen as one of the most important of the Seven
Sacraments.
◦ It is during the Eucharist, which Christ changes bread and wine into his Body and Blood
and invites participants, free from sin, to receive him in Hoy Communion.
Christ through Holy Communion:
◦ Draws Christians into deeper union with himself
◦ nourishes spiritual gifts, especially those received through the other six sacraments
◦ cleanses past sins
◦ strengthens against sin
◦ deepens unity with the wider Church community and
◦ commits to the poor.
OUR LEARNING JOURNEY
◦ Throughout this term our learning journey has been centered on developing each and
every child, their faith connections and progression towards their first Holy Communion.
◦ Our classroom unit of inquiry has been focused on the Eucharist, wondering at our
bodies which are all different, God who created our bodies and how Jesus shows love
and care to all.
◦ We have based our learning around the three core foundations of Religious Education
in the classroom:
1. Wondering at the Creator
2. The Promise of Christian Salvation
3. Christian Response

◦ These learning experiences include crafts, reflections, observing and analysing

Scripture and Bible stories, and discussing their own thoughts and feelings
towards the actions of Jesus, and others.
ACTIVITY TIME
We will be taking part in a small activity which your children have
completed throughout their learning journey so far. We wish for you to take
a card, writing down one word that you can use to sum up the sacrament of
the Eucharist.

We then wish for you to turn over the card and write down what you are
thankful for in your life and what you wish to thank God for. This may be one
thing, or it may be many.

We will then proceed to place them into our Box of Thanks. This box has
been used throughout our journey with the students to give thanks to God
for all that He does for us and remind ourselves of our strong connection with
Him.
THE CELEBRATION
◦ The children celebrating their First Communion will be the first of the congregation to
receive the sacrament. They will proceed up to the priest or catechist, who is specially
ordained to hand out Communion, and "receive" the Communion, which by this time
has been turned into the "Body of Christ."
◦ When receiving Communion, the children will either fold their hands on top of one
another and bring them up to receive the Eucharist, allowing the priest to place the
Eucharist into their hands.
◦ During the ceremony, most of the readings that would traditionally be done during a
Catholic Mass, will be read by a few of the children. These roles will be distributed
evenly, however if your child wishes to read a specific part in our celebration, do let us
know.
◦ They will form two lines, proceed back to their pews, where they will make the sign of
the cross before kneeling below their seats to personally reflect and pray.
