2
Definition ofpollution
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into a natural
environment that causes disorder or harm to the ecosystem .
• Pollution can take in the form of chemical substances or energy
such as noise, heat or light.

3
Types ofpollution
There are four types of pollution
• Air
• Water
• Land
• Noise

4
What is air pollution?
• Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter,
or biological materials that cause harm to the natural
atmosphere.
• Air pollution causes discomfort to humans, living organisms
• Cause damage to the natural or built environment.

5
Causes of airpollution
• Burning of Fossil Fuels: Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion
of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is
one the major cause of air pollution.
• Agricultural activities: Ammonia is a very common by product from
agriculture related activities and is one of the most hazardous gases
in the atmosphere.
• Exhaust from factories and industries: Manufacturing industries
release large amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic
compounds, and chemicals into the air thereby depleting the quality
of air.

6
• Mining operations: During the process dust and chemicals are
released in the air causing massive air pollution.
• Indoor air pollution: Household cleaning products, painting supplies
emit toxic chemicals in the air and cause air pollution.

7
Effects of airpollution
• Air pollution causes irritation in the throat, nose, lungs and eyes. It
causes breathing problems and aggravates existing health conditions
such as emphysema and asthma.
• Contaminated air reduces the body’s defenses and decreases the
body’s capacity to fight other infections in the respiratory system.
• Frequent exposure to polluted air increases the risk of cardiovascular
disease. Breathing air that is filled with fine particulate matter can
induce hardening of the arteries, triggering cardiac arrhythmia or
even a heart attack.
.
8
• People who exercise outdoors are susceptible to the adverse effects
of air pollution because it involves deeper and faster breathing.
• Acid rain contains hydrogen ions, which can damage trees, crops,
harm marine animals and induce corrosion in metals.
• Smog causes harmful health effects in humans and animals. Studies
have shown signs of black lung disease in dolphins of due to high
concentrations of carbon particles in the air.
• People afflicted with heart disease, children and older people are
more sensitive to air pollution
9
How to prevent airpollution ?
• The forest cover should be protected.
• Green belts should be created. Such areas should be developed around densely
populated cities.
• Automobile engines should be redesigned in such a way that their emissions
cause minimum pollution.
• Electric engines should be used instead of steam or diesel engines in railways .
• Industrial areas should be located at a safe distance from the residential areas.
• Newly designed smoke free furnaces should be used.
• Forest fires should be checked.
• In industries there should be the arrangement for pollution control.
Air pollution can be checked only through the joint efforts of the government,
non-government organizations and the general public.
10
What is water pollution
• Any change or modification in the physical, chemical and biological
properties of water that has a detrimental consequence on living
things is called water pollution.

11
Causes of waterpollution
• Water pollution is caused by organic and inorganic industrial
waste discharged in water.
• Sewage and waste water release into water bodies.
• Oil leakage from ships.
• Contamination by Plastic waste .

About 40% of deaths worldwide are caused by water pollution

12
Effects of waterpollution
• Diseases like Cholera
• Aquatic life gets destroyed
• Affects food chain
• Cause algae
• Less pure water to drink

13
How to prevent waterpollution
• Rivers should not be used for washing clothes or bathing
animals in.
• Dams should be created.
• In sacred rivers like Ganga dead bodies shouldn’t be thrown.

14
What is landpollution

• Land pollution is the degradation of the earth’s surface and

misuse of land resources often caused by human activities.

15
Causes of landpollution
Throwing garbage
Construction
Industrial waste
Mining
Deforestation

16
Effects of landpollution
• Soil pollution: Soil pollution is another form of land pollution, where
the upper layer of the soil is damaged.
• Change in climate patterns: The effects of land pollution are very
hazardous and can lead to the loss of ecosystems.
• Environmental Impact: When deforestation is committed, the tree
cover is compromised on.
• effect on human health: The land when contaminated with toxic
chemicals and pesticides lead to problem of skin cancer and human
respiratory system.
17
• Cause Air pollution: Landfills across the city keep on growing due to
increase in waste and are later burned which leads to air pollution.
• Distraction for Tourist: The city looses its attraction as tourist
destination as landfills do not look good when you move around the
city.
• Effect on wildlife: The animal kingdom has suffered mostly in the past
decades. They face a serious threat with regards to loss of habitat and
natural environment.

18
How to prevent landpollution
• More and more land should be brought under plantation and
farming .
• Trees should be planted everywhere.
• Waste matter should be disposed properly.
• Avoid drilling lands for underground water.
• Avoid using fertilizer and pesticides for farming.

19
What is noisepollution ?
• Noise pollution, unwanted or excessive sound that can have
effects on human health and environmental quality.
• Noise pollution results into irritation and anger.

20
Causes of noisepollution
• Traffic noise
• Aero plains and aero drums.
• Noise from construction and civil engineers work.
• Noise from industries
• Noise from other sources

21
Effects of noisepollution
• Hearing loss
• Sleep disturbances
• High blood pressure
• Stress

22
How to prevent noisepollution?
• ensure the new machines are noise proof.
• Airports should be away from residential areas.
• ‘No horn’ boards should be put on/near school areas.

We should talk less and work more.

23
Conclusion
• Major causes of pollution are man made activities.
• The problems are diverse and some are only being recognized but it is
important to keep a close control over pollutants so that we can
maintain the environment in an acceptable condition for future
generations.
• Natural resources should be used in the optimum level.

human activities is the main root for exploitation of natural resources
