INTRODUCTION:
AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM:
The system which deals with water
bodies and other biotic communities present in them
are either fresh water or marine water.
TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS:(lentic
Pond ecosystem.
Lake ecosystem.
River ecosystem.
Steams.
Oceans.
Estuaries.
CHARACTERSTIC FEATURES:
It is a small fresh water ecosystem where
water is stagnant.
And ponds may be in nature i.e,receiving
enough water during rainy season.
These are usually big fresh water bodies with standing
water.
And it consists of 3 zones.
 Littoral zone.(shallow water zone.)
 Limnetic zone. (an open water zone where effective
penetration of solar light takes place.)
 Profoundal zone.(a deep bottom area where light
penetration is negligible.)
And this stratification or zonation based on temperature
variations.
And water consists of 2 levels one is eplimnion and
other is hypolimnion.
TYPES OF LAKES:
 Oligotropic lakes:The lakes which have low nutrient
concentrations.
 EUTROPHIC LAKES:Which are over nourished by
nutrients like phosphorus&nitrogen, usually as a result
of agricultural run off or municipal sewage
discharge.eg:dal lake.
 Dystrophic lakes: the lakes which have less ph value,
high humic acid content and brown water .e.g;bog
lakes.
 Endemic lakes: these are the lakes which are ancient,
and had endemic fauna which are restricted only for
that lake.eg:the lake baikal,russia.
 DESERT SALT LAKES: these occurs in arid regions and
have developed high salt concentrations as a result of
high evoporation.eg:greatsalt lake in utah.
 VOLCUNIC LAKES: these are the lakes which receive
volcunic eruptions.eg:many lakes Japan.
STREAMS:These are fresh aquatic ecosystems
where water current is a major controlling
factor, oxygenand nutrient in the water is more
uniform and land-water exchange is more
extensive. The dissolved oxygen is more.
River ecosystem:these are the large streams
that flow downwardsfrom mountain and
highlands and flowing through plains fall
into sea.so the river ecosystem show a series
of different conditions.
organisms:
Planktons.
Nektons.
Neustons.
Benthos.
Stratification:it is nothing but zonation.and lake
shows 2 types.
Epilimnion.
Hypolimnion.
The mountain highland: This part has cold, clear water
rushing down as waterfalls with large amount of dissolved
oxygen.
In the second phase:in water falls on the gentle slope the
water was warmer and support a luxuriant growth of plants
and less oxygen required for fishes.
IN THE THIRD PHASE: the river water are very rich in
biotic diversity. Moving down the hills, rivers shape the
land.
OCEANS: these are the gigantic reservoirs of .water
covering more than 70% of the earth surface.
The ocean has two major life zones
Coastal zone :it is relatively warm contains rich nutrients.it
consists of high primary productivity.
Euphotic zone : it is the which receives abundant light and
shows high photosynthetic activity
ESTUARY: it is a partially enclosed coastal area at the mouth of a river
where Fresh water and salty sea water meet. These are the transition zones
which are Strongly effected by tidal action. It consists of urithermal and
urihaline.
Oceans:oceans are the ecosystems which are of more than 70%
water.and these oceans consists of 2 zones.
Coastal zone.
Opensea.
