Powerhouse - Methodology
Stage 1 – External Elements
BASE SLAB – typically 3m thick but stepped to accommodate draft tubes
Program duration of 75 days
• Base Slab constructed in 3No lifts to accommodate Draft Tube installation.
• Current program had draft tube delivery after completion of Stage 1 concrete activities.
• Base slab constructed with a trough to accommodate later draft tube installation.

Lower Walls - 10.3m in height, thickness varies from 3m to approx. 4.5m

Program Duration of 70 days
• To reduce program duration, construction joint prep activities and curing allowances, lower walls
constructed in 2No lifts, each approx. 5.1m in height.

Upper Walls – 48.75m in height, thickness varies from 1.5m to 1m

Program Duration of 42 days
• Constructed by Slipform process as a 24hr continuous operation.

• Stage 1 Construction Sequence

• Stage 2 Construction Sequence

Penstock Install - Scope of Work

• Overall Length – 888m
• Maximum installation grade – 45 deg for 100m on approach to powerhouse
• Penstock In-Dia – 3.8m (2.8t/m) to 5.4m (3.9t/m) excluding stiffeners & assuming 32mm wall thickness
• Undertaking only circumferential welding on site – i.e. delivery in full ‘cans’
• Lengths of strings delivered optimized to minimize onsite welding, thus string length vary according
to location.
• Penstock Installation Strategy based on 5 installation zones

Penstock Install – Sections/Installation Types

Type 0 Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Type 4

Penstock Install - Methodology & Estimate

• Overall penstock installation strategy is to minimise site welding, thus requiring the maximisation of
installation string lengths.
Type 0
• Single Crane Install, Shorter strings ~ 13m to simplify logistics/cranage at upper reservoir
Type 1
• ‘Launching’ approach provided relief from the issues with heavy plant (350t crawler cranes and
transportation plant) access requirements along alignment
• Several launch arrangements were considered, together with the advantages and associated
challenges:

• Hydraulic launch a ‘long’ penstock string – top down => High setup cost
• Hydraulic launch a ‘short’ penstock string – top down => Increased welding Costs
• Winch launch a ‘medium’ penstock string – top down => Logistics & welding costs increased
• Winch launch a ‘medium’ penstock string – bottom up=> Current arrangement
Upper Penstock – Type 1 CH 100 to CH450

Penstock Install - Methodology & Estimate

Type 2
• Dual Lift Install, Longer strings ~ 23m to reduce on site welding, dual lift due to depth of installation
and required standoff.
Mid Level Penstock – Type 2

Type 3
• Penstock Approach to Powerhouse to be constructed ‘Top Down’ in sequence with the excavation
of the Powerhouse.
• This approach removes the penstock from critical path, but places the procurement of key
penstock elements early in the program, specifically the 3.8m dia penstock the associated
bifurcation.
Lower Penstock – Type 3 CH 750 to Powerhouse
