What is HAZARD?


HAZARDS

Phenomenon, substance, human
activity or threats that may cause
injury, loss of life or other health
impacts, property damage, loss of
livelihoods and services social and
economic disruption, or environmental
damage.
TYPES OF HAZARDS

1. Ongoing and rapid/sudden-onset threats
 accidental oil spills
 nuclear plant failures
Chemical plant accidents (such as
chemical chemical releases to the air or
into rivers and water bodies.
These include geological and hydro-
meteorological hazards except droughts

2. Slow-onset threats
Long term and cumulative environmental
changes that may cause serious crises.
 Air and water pollution, soi, loss of biol pollution, acid
rain, climate change, desertification, droughts, ecosystems
change, deforestation and forest fragmentation, loss of
biodiversity and habitats, nitrogen overloading,
radioactive waste, coastal erosion, pressure on living
marine resources, rapid unplanned urban growth,
environment and health, land cover/land changes,
environment and conflict, among others.

 Natural
 Technological
 Anthropogenic or social


Impacts of hazards

 Depends highly on the entities being exposed to
hazards.
 Vulnerable population ( elders and children) are
likely to be most affected by hazards Families may
be affected by having a traumatic experience.
 Survivors may resort to crimes resulting to a chaotic
community due to limited resulting or absence
supply of food
 More people with houses made of light materials
will be homeless.
Impacts of hazards

 Commercial and agricultural structures will be
damaged by hazards.
 Different institutions such as government, private
and non-government will be disorganized and
uncooperative if everyone wants to survive in the
midst of existing hazards.

How can we resolve
hazards?
Hazards can be
resolved:

 Through adaptive capacity or resiliency of the
community.
 There must be enough supply of food in case of
emergency in pre identified evacuation centers.
 There must also be equal access to information and
resources among the affected people.
