Pollution and Smog

Group 3
Reporting
What will we talk about?

Pollution
Activities that’s causes pollution
How people affect air and water
Smog
Pollution

Pollution is harmful change

in the natural environment.
This happens
Because Earth’s land, water,
and air have a limited
capacity to absorb wastes
How is pollution made?
Ways pollution is cause

Oil spills
Strip-mining
Farming Practices
Cutting down forest
Urban Growth
Oil Spills

When oil leaks from a boat and floats in to the water’s

surface. A lot of bad things could happen.
Ex.
 Seabirds would find it difficult to eat
 Sea mammals will be covered in Oil
 Oil will sink to the bottom of the ocean
 Wash to the shore
Strip-Mining

Strip-Mining involve scraping

away large areas of dirt and
topsoil. When it rains, the dirt
wear away and the topsoil
washes into the streams and
lakes.
Farming Practices

People can harm the soil through

certain farm practices. When crop
are harvested the field is cleared
completely sometimes. If this
happens little plant matter is left to
decay and restore nutrients to the
soil. And planting the same crop
year after year also uses up the soil
nutrients. In time the soil becomes
unable to support plant life.
Cutting down forests

Cutting down of forests

without planting new trees
also removes the roots
that prevents soil erosion
Urban Growth

As populations of urban areas

increases, the needs of
transportation also grows and these
will cause pollution to the city and
pollute the atmosphere. This affects
all the living thing in the area such as
animals and people.
How do people affect water and air?
Ways People affect Air and Water

•Factories
•People working in Agriculture
•Fertilizer runoff
Factories

Some factories that make

products we use everyday
may also dump wastes
and chemical into the
lakes and rivers.
People working in Agriculture

People working in agriculture

usually apply fertilizers and
pesticides to soil and crops.
Some of the chemicals soak
into the ground or flow into
lakes and rivers, harming fish,
birds and mammals
Fertilizer Runoff

Fertilizer Runoff can disrupt entire

ecosystems. It increases algae
growth so much that the water
turns green. Masses of dead,
Decaying algae can use up vital
oxygen dissolved in the water,
killing fish and water plants.
What is Smog?
Smog

It is a type of air pollution Smoke + fog = Smog

that can form over urban
or industrial areas. Smog
is a combination of
smoke and fog. Smog
irritates the eyes, nose
and throat.
Quick Question:

What is the difference of Smog and pollution?

Pollution is the harmful change in the
environment while smog is just air that’s is
the combination of fog and smoke that
irritates the person’s eyes, nose and throat
