Observation is one of the greatest powers in the universe
But with so many people, places, animals and things,
how was it possible to find out who is who?
1. N O U N S
King Nouner came up with a brilliant idea! He decided
to give a name to every person, place, animal and
thing. These names came to be known as Nouns!
NOUN
A Noun is the name of a person, place, animal or a thing. Nouns
are naming words.
With nouns, every person, place, animal and thing had a name. It
became easier to identify everyone with a name!

There are a few basic rules to remember when it comes to turning
a singular noun into a plural noun.
1 When we make a plural noun, we usually ad –s.
Here are some examples of plural nouns with s.
There are special spelling rules for making the plural form of some
countable nouns.
When a singular noun ends in a hissing sound like s, ss, tch,
2
x, sh and z, we add es to make the plural form.
bus buses
waltz waltzes
fox foxes bus es buses
wish wishes
But if the hissing sound is followed by a silent e, then we just
3
add s to make the plural form.
maze mazes
base bases
noise noises
axe es axes

When a singular noun ends in ch, we need to
consider two things.
REMEMBE
R
4 a) If the –ch is a soft sound, we add –es to make the plural form.
lunch lunches
branch branches
sandwich sandwiches
b) If the –ch is a hard sound (like –k), we add –s to make the
plural form.
monarch monarchs
eunuch eunuchs
When a singular noun ends in y, we need to
consider two things.
REMEMBE
R
5 a) If there is a vowel in front of the y, we add s to make the
plural form.
key keys
toy toys
monkey monkeys
b) If there is a consonant in front of the y, first we change the y to
–i, then we add es.
baby babies
city cities
party parties

6 For most singular nouns ending in o, we simply add s to make
the plural form.
yoyo yoyos
zoo zoos
video videos
7 But there are some nouns ending in o that take es in the plural
form.
hero heroes
potato potatoes
volcano volcanoes
8 There are also some nouns ending in o that can take either s or
es in the plural form.
48

For singular nouns ending in f or fe, we can form the plural in
9
two ways.
a) For some nouns, we drop the f or fe and add ves.
half halves
life lives
loaf loaves
wolf f ves wolves
wolf wolves
b) For other nouns, we keep the f or fe and just add s
safe safes
reef reefs

chief chiefs chief s chiefs
Some nouns can be used in the singular or plural form without any
change in spelling. The words before and after the noun tell us
whether the noun is singular or plural.
A young deer played happily Deer live in the forest. (plural)

Compound Nouns
DEFINITION
Some nouns are made up of more than one word, for
example, soninlaw. These nouns are called compound
nouns.
1 To make the plural form of a compound noun, we add s to the
main word.
Singular Plural

2 There are some countable nouns which have their own special
irregular plural forms.

MY RULE BOOK – The Plural army has attacked the forest and all
12
singular animals are under threat. You need to convert all singular
words to plurals. To do this, you need a rule book that will explain to
each of your soldiers how to convert any singular to plural.
Create a beautiful rule book in a forest theme and give examples from
the forest to explain each rule.
Try to use animals and other forest
characters as examples. You may draw a
forest scene
to make your rule book look better!

1 Many feminine nouns are formed by adding ess to the end of a
masculine noun.
Masculine Feminine
author authoress
manager manageress
murderer murderess
waiter waitress
actor actress
In books and newspapers nowadays, the words
actor and author can refer to both women and men.
REMEMBER
Many people feel that words ending in ess are very old fashioned
these days, and that we should use the masculine form of the word to
refer to male and feminine form of the word to refer to female living
things, especially when we talk about people.
Some nouns like baby, animal and cousin can be both
masculine and feminine. They are called common gender
nouns.
