Activities in an
Ecosystem

1. To recognize the impact of human activities to

the ecosystem.
2. Suggest ways to minimize human impact on the
environment.
3. To design steps or ways for protection and
conservation of natural resources.

REVIEW
 An ecosystem includes all of the living things (plants,
animals and organisms) in a given area, interacting with
each other, and also with their non-living environments
(weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, atmosphere).
 There are essentially two kinds of ecosystems; Aquatic
and Terrestrial.
 Ecosystems are the foundations of the Biosphere and they
determine the health of the entire earth system .

 Can we consider Zamboanga Sibugay rich in
natural resources? Why?
 What are the different ecosystems shown in

ENGAGE
 How are these pictures related to one another?
 Do you know where these products came from?
 How are these products utilized by citizens of
Zamboanga to make them useful in their lives?
 What are the human activities that will make us obtain
those products? How about for gold and the other
minerals?
 How will these affect the ecosystems?

Activity: Search for Hidden Treasures (15 minutes)

 You will be divided into 5 groups.
 Each group will make a dish garden with 10 small treasures representing gold
and other minerals buried in it.
 Make the dish garden as beautiful as you can.
 If your done, take a picture of your dish garden and have a groufie with it.
 Then, exchange dish garden with the other group.
 Upon the signal of the teacher, find the hidden treasures in the dish garden

 READY…SET…GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
 The treasure will be kept but the dish garden will be
returned back to the group who owns it. Take a look of
what you have done!
 Once returned, your group will observe and record what
happened to your dish garden.
 Take pictures of the dish garden and have a groufie again.
 Compare the pictures with the ones taken before and
after exchanging with the other group.
EXPLAIN
 What happened to the dish gardens? Why?
 Presuming that these dish gardens represent the
ecosystems of your community, what is the impact of this
kind of human activity (mining) to the ecosystem?
 What are the hazards brought about by this?
 List down the advantages and disadvantages of mining
which is one of the human activities in the environment.
 Why is it important to protect and conserve these
resources?
 How can we help protect and conserve our ecosystems or
the natural resources in general?
 Present your output to your classmates!!!

 Natural environment is of crucial importance for social
and economic life. We use the living world
(Ecosystem):
• as a resource for food supply
• an energy source
• a source for recreation
• a major source of medicines
• natural resources for industrial products
 Humans impact the environment in several ways.
 Common effects include:
 decreased water quality
 increased pollution
 increased greenhouse gas emissions
 depletion of natural resources
 contribution to global climate change
 Some of these are the direct result of human activities,
whereas others are secondary effects that are part of a series
of actions and reactions.

 Impact of mankind on the environment is profound and in many cases has
been both negative and irreversible
 Identified offenders of the ecological balance of the earth is the mining
industry.
 Philippines is one of these countries that is unquestionably facing serious
biological disturbance and environmental damage due to irresponsible mining
industries.

 What are environmental impacts of mining?
 significant disturbance of ecosystems and habitats
 deforestation and disturb or destroy productive grazing and croplands
 erosion
 formation of sinkholes
 loss of biodiversity
 contamination of soil, groundwater and surface
 In urbanized environments, mining may produce noise pollution, dust
pollution and visual pollution.
 Besides creating environmental damage, also affect the health of the
