“THE GREATEST BATTLE YOU WAGE AGAINST FAILURE

OCCURS ON THE INSIDE, NOT THE OUTSIDE”
It doesn’t matter whether our objectives are in the area of work,
business , relationships or ministry. The only way you can get ahead is to
FAIL EARLY, FAIL OFTEN and FAIL FORWARD.
“The person interested in success has to learn to view
failure as a healthy, inevitable part of the process of
getting to the top.”

- Psychologist, Dr. Joyce Brothers-

BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

1. Adversity creates Resilience

What is resilience?
The process of adapting well in the face of adversity,
trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of
stress — such as family and relationship problems,
serious health problems or workplace and financial
stressors.
THREE ELEMENTS ESSENTIAL TO RESILIENCE
1.Challenge

- Resilient people view a difficulty as a

challenge, not as a paralyzing event.

-They look at their failures and mistakes as

lessons to be learned from, and as
opportunities for growth. They don't view them
as a negative reflection on their abilities or
self-worth.
2.Commitment

-Resilient people are committed to their lives and

their goals, and they have a compelling reason to
get out of bed in the morning.

-Commitment isn't just restricted to their work –

they commit to their relationships, their friendships,
the causes they care about, and their religious or
spiritual beliefs.
3.Personal Control

-Resilient people spend their time and energy

focusing on situations and events that they have
control over.

-Because they put their efforts where they can

have the most impact, they feel empowered and
confident. Those who spend time worrying about
uncontrollable events can often feel lost, helpless,
and powerless to take action.
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

II. Adversity develops maturity

Where do you get most wisdom to? In

success or failures?

Maturity with flexibility

The problems we face and overcome

prepare us for future difficulties
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY
III. Adversity pushes the envelope
of accepted performance

Until a person learns from personal experience

that he can live through adversity, he is
reluctant to buck mindless tradition, push the
envelope of organizational performance, or
challenge himself to physical limits.

Failures helps prompt people to rethink the

status quo
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

IV. Adversity provides greater opportunities

Eliminating problems limits our potential

Stories of setbacks and adversity makes way to

open new doors of opportunity.
BERNIE MARCUS

-Son of a poor Russian cabinetmaker

- Lives in Newark New Jersey
- got fired from a do-it yourself hardware retailer
- Prompted to start their own business (HOME DEPOT)

Home depot has more than 760 stores and employs

157,000 people.

*For sure he wasn’t happy being fired back then,

but if he hadn’t been, who knows whether he would have
achieved the success he have today
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

V. Adversity prompts Innovation

The ability to innovate is at the heart

of creativity– a vital component in
success.

If you want to succeed, you have to learn

to make adjustments to the way you do
things and try again.
EDGAR BERTGEN

- Sent 25 cents to a publisher to buy a book on photography. Instead,

received a wrong parcel and it was a book about ventriloquism.
- Adapted and learned about ventriloquism.
- Became famous for over forty years

“ If you want to succeed, you have to learn to make adjustments to the way
you do things and try again. Adversity helps to develop that ability.
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

V.I Adversity brings unexpected benefits

The average person makes a mistake, and

automatically think that it’s a failure.

But some of the greatest stories of success

can be found in the unexpected benefits of
mistakes.
Resulted when boiled wheat A batch was left in the mixer
Toilet Paper machine put too
was left in the baking pan too long and had a large volume
many layers of tissue together
overnight of air whipped into it.

“In Science, Mistakes always precede the truth”

-Horace Walpole-
BENEFITS OF ADVERSITY

VII. Adversity motivates

“ I think failure is one of the great motivators.
After my narrow loss in the 1948 trials, I knew
how really good I could be. It was the defeat
that focused all my concentration on my
training and goals”

- Pat McCormick-

(Went to win two gold medals in London that year

and 4 years later in Helsinki)
“ If you can step back from the negative
circumstances we face in life, we will be able to
discover that there are positive benefits to your
negative experiences.”

HOW?
You simply have to be willing to look for them---
and not take the adversity you are experiencing
too personally.
