Heavy Timber

• Method of creating framed structures using large timbers joined together

with wood joinery, pegs, or metal connectors
• Wood products commonly used in heavy timber construction include solid
timbers, glue-laminated members and parallel strand lumber.
• Timber frame members and components are normally prefabricated in
mechanized shops and transported to the site for assembly
• A timber frame structure is made up of walls, floors, roofs and bents
• Bents are full height frame constructions that run perpendicular to the walls
and provide the primary structural posts of the frame
ENGINEERED TIMBER FRAME
CONSTRUCTION
• The use of engineered wood allows designers to employ larger members
with better structural properties than solid wood.
• Columns, beams, joists, rigid frames, arches, domes, and decking can be made
from glued-laminated or other engineered wood products
• Glued-laminated
members are
engineered, stress-
rated members made
by laminating soft
wood members with
adhesives and resins
Timber Joinery
• Timber joinery is the traditional method of connecting heavy timber
structural members
• It uses interlocking wood joints such as tenons, dados, or halving joints that
are cut into wood members
Arches and
Domes
• Glued-laminated arched
can span long distances
up to 70ft or more.
• Span capabilities
depend on he type of
arch, imposed loads,
roof pitch and species
of wood
Glues-laminated arches and domes may be two-hinged, with hinges at each base, or three-hinged, with
an additional hinge at the crown
A hinge joint is any joint that permits movement but in w/c there is no appreciable separation of
adjacent members
Columns, Beams, and Trusses

• Several ways to
secure both solid and
glues-laminated
beams to foundation
• Heavy timber trusses are uses to span
the width of a building and support
purlins that carry the roof decking
Decking
• Decking systems for heavy timber construction includes laminated and solid
wood decking, stressed-skin panels, and plywood panels
• Decking is usually installed in random lengths with joints centered on
supporting timbers. Joints are staggered for better structural strength
