Articulating Hemp’s Relevance

• 2011: The founders, still Business students in college, worked on Project Chirag (a
youth initiative to provide solar electricity to rural houses), exposing them to a set of
far-reaching rural challenges.
• Nimbin, Australia: A small town that is self-sustainable, and runs primarily on Hemp.
The founders drew inspiration from this simple idea and channelled their learnings
from business school, Project Chirag, and their travels through rural India, to build
BOHECO, a business set to push against the currents of poverty, unemployment, and
climate change.
• Reasoning: To be able to use wisely and commercialise a source of sustainability
(Hemp) that has been in India for thousands of years but is regarded as a negative
influence due to its intoxicating qualities.
• The Journey: The next step was to discover the regions where Hemp is widely available
in India, followed by an exploration of how the crop could be transformed into livelihood
opportunities for locals like farmers and artisans. The team set base in Uttarakhand,
where the crop grows wildly.
• Discovery: As a cultural gist, the raw form of Hemp was transformed into charming
handlooms by using the fibres from the plant. This practice was undertaken by the
women of the villages, and was a custom passed down the generations.
• Currently: What began with 25 families in 2011, today supports 75 families all over
Uttarkashi, Rudra Prayag, Tehri Garhwal, Dehradun, Almora, Baageshwar, Chamoli,
Pithoragarh, Pauri, and Nainital. A total of 150 women are currently employed with their
on-ground partners, and are being trained to weave with Hemp yarn.

“Think basic, think fundamental; you will never be irrelevant.
