What is a Software?
• Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical components
of the system (hardware).

• This includes application software such as a word processor, which enables a user to perform a task, and system
software such as an operating system, which enables other software to run properly, by interfacing with hardware
and with other software.

• Practical computer systems divide software into three major classes: system software, programming software and
application software, although the distinction is arbitrary, and often blurred.

• Computer software has to be "loaded" into the computer's storage (such as a hard drive, memory, or RAM).

• Once the software is loaded, the computer is able to execute the software.

• Computers operate by executing the computer program.

• This involves passing instructions from the application software, through the system software, to the hardware
which ultimately receives the instruction as machine code.

• Each instruction causes the computer to carry out an operation -- moving data, carrying out a computation, or
altering the control flow of instructions.
Application Software:-
Application software is a type of computer program that performs a specific
personal, educational, and business function. Each program is designed to
assist the user with a particular process, which may be related to productivity,
creativity, and/or communication. A normal user rarely gets to see the
operating system or to work with it. But all of us are familiar with application
software which we must use to interact with a computer. Popular examples of
application software are the Microsoft office suite which includes Word, Excel
and PowerPoint. We have used these applications extensively. Internet
explorer, Mozilla Firefox is two applications used to access the internet. E-
mail software like Outlook express is used to manage Emails. It is obvious
that all software utilized for working on a computer is classified as application
software. In fact all user interfaces are an application.
Functions of Application Software:-
Application software programs are created to facilitate a variety of functions:-

• managing information

• manipulating data

• constructing visuals

• coordinating resources

• calculating figures
Examples of Application Software:-
The most common application software programs are used by millions every
day and include:-

• Microsoft suite of products (Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

• Internet browsers like Firefox, Safari, and Chrome

• mobile pieces of software such as Pandora (for music appreciation), Skype

(for real-time online communication), and Slack (for team collaboration)
Business Application Software:-
Business Application Software is a subset of the application software. These
programs are built to facilitate certain business functions, improving the
accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations. Business application
software programs achieve measurable objectives such as saving work time
and enhancing productivity.
Below are some popular examples of business applications that are
commonly used by organizations:-
• Enterprise Resource Planning
• Customer Relationship Management
• Project Management Software
• Business Process Management Software
• Word Processor
• Spreadsheet

• Database

• Resource Management Software

• Productivity Software

• Scheduling Software

• Time Management Software

• Educational Software
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a type
of business software used by companies –
usually via a bundle of integrated applications
– to solicit, review, store, manipulate, and
analyze data derived from a variety of
business operations.

Customer relationship management (CRM)

is a type of business software used by
companies – usually via a bundle of
integrated applications – to solicit, review,
store, and analyze customer data, and also to
manage customer interaction and facilitate
the sales process and relevant partner
relationships.
Project management (PM) software is a
type of business software designed to plan
and execute projects, and to manage the
resources associated with those projects.
PM software assists users with functions
such as scheduling, assigning tasks,
managing budgets and costs, documenting
progress, and reporting results.

Business Project Management software is a type of

business software designed to facilitate the rapid
development and automation of strategic processes. It
often uses web-based modeling, rule creation, and a simple
interface to enable the user to perform business functions
more quickly. Usually optimized for mobile devices and
offering total visibility into operations, BPM software is
helpful in managing and analyzing complex data, content,
and processes across the enterprise.
A database is an electronic
arsenal of data that a user
builds in order to later
access, review, and update
particular pieces of
information in a rapid and
coherent manner.

Resource management is a type of business software that

facilitates the management of multiple projects and resources
and ensures that everything is allocated effectively in real time.
Productivity software is a type of business
software that helps users do their jobs more
efficiently and complete work-related tasks in a
timely manner. Categories of productivity
software include:-
•document creation
•database management
•Accounting
•Collaboration
Applications that an organization uses for
overall productivity are sometimes referred to
together as a software or application stack.

Time management software is a

type of business software that
tracks how an individual’s digital
systems are used, including how
long the user spends working in
certain applications.
Educational software is a type
of software that facilitates the
teaching and learning of new
content, concepts, or
processes.
How should one select the right
application software?
• Conduct A Needs Assessment - Selecting a solution that’s best for your
organization should begin with a needs assessment in which you solicit
feedback from managers, colleagues, partners, and providers.
• You’ll want to first understand the problem the application software must
solve, the type of tasks and processes the solution should positively impact,
and the target user for the solution. Some of the things to consider as part of
a needs assessment are:
• Functionality Needed
• Implementation
• Support
• IT Infrastructure
• Global expertise
• Pricing & Return on Investment

users become more familiar with the application software building
process.

Phased Or All-At-Once Implementation - You should have a solid

handle on implementation, including how the new solution will be rolled
out (phases versus all at once, enterprise-wide versus single business
unit, organized training versus self-directed training), how you will offer
support, and how you will measure short and long-term success, before
you sign on the dotted line.
List of current application software:-
Popular Applications:-

• Adobe Creative Cloud

• Microsoft Office

• Web Browsers

• Additional Applications:-

• Audio Editing

• Computer Programming

• Communication

• Document Readers & Tools

• Image Editing

• Math and Statistics

• Media Players

• SSH & FTP

• All Software
Importance of Application Software:-
Application software” or “software applications” (or apps) help the end users perform single or
multiple tasks. Application software finds its presence in enterprise as well as non-enterprise
applications. Enterprise “application software” includes enterprise resource planning (or
ERP), supply chain management, embedded software, and customer relationship
management.
Non-enterprise application software includes:-
• Entertainment – game applications for media, CD, and DVD—like Solitaire and Rhapsody
• Graphics – applications for image organizing, editing, and sharing—like HP (HPQ),
Photosmart Essentials, Adobe Illustrator (ADB)
• Security – applications to detect firewalls and antivirus protection—like Norton
• Mobile apps – application software meant for a mobile device, smartphone, or tablet.
Among all enterprise software, ERP application is the largest application used worldwide
followed by Office Suites and CRM. ERP is enterprise software that integrates all the
operations and functions of an organization. Office Suite refers to a collection of software
programs that can interact with each other. As a result, Office Suite programs are generally
distributed together (for example—Microsoft Office)
When application software is
negative:-
Just like there are positive software, there are also negative forms of
application software used for nefarious purposes. Applications software can
carry the following hidden programs or utilities:
• Malware: This stands for malicious software. Most common forms of
malware are Trojan horses, worms and viruses.
• Adware and Spyware: Adware and spyware are other common types of
software. Adware includes sponsored freeware available when you register.
Sometimes, adware tracks internet surfing habits to become intrusive and
change into spyware. It then keeps a record of all the sites you have surfed
and comes up with ads which it feels are relevant to you. Unlike adware,
spyware has a negative connotation.
• Greyware: This is a term used to categories all the software falling between
malicious software and other codes including track-ware and spyware.
• Nagware: This refers to software that comes in the form of pop ups. etc
