Abstract

• The bandsaw bearings were rusted and dysfunctional. The


guide bands were broken. These elements are necessary in
a horizontal bandsaw to ensure proper feed and
movement of the cutting blade across the work piece.
• Apart from the guide bands and guide bearings, the
hydraulics mechanism which is responsible for the gradual
feed of the cutting blade, was dysfunctional.
• Our project was to design and fabricate the necessary
elements to get the horizontal bandsaw working again.
Problem Identified
• The problem rose from the Rusting of
various parts over time. Which lead to the
failure of the guide bands and guide
bearings. The hydraulics mechanism was
unresponsive.
• To Design the guide bearings, we had to
find the loading conditions of the bearings
in a horizontal bandsaw.
Progress made so far
• We have fabricated the bearings and the guide
band for the horizontal band saw.
• The error in the hydraulics mechanism was a
slight bend in the piston rod. Which we
rectified.
• Large portions of rust were removed.
Work to be completed

• Bearings are to be checked for longevity.


• Machine is to be tested under running conditions.

TASKS COMPLETED:
• The above two tasks have been completed and video record of machine in working
condition has been attached. (For demo, go to the slides after ‘CONCLUSION’.)
Fabrication Details

• The bearing attachment directly supported


the load of the entire top portion which
contained the band wheels, blades, etc.
• Hence it broke.
• We did brazing to the attachment and
designed new bearings and have given a screw
with enough length and diameter to support
the load.

Conclusion
• The bandsaw is now in working condition
again.
• The bandsaw may need Routine checks
for any misalignment of piston rod.
• An improvement would be the addition of a
spring tension adjustment mechanism.
