Primary Purpose of School Counseling

• Life Career Development Perspective

– Self-knowledge and interpersonal skills.

– Life roles, settings and events.

– Life career planning.

– Basic studies and occupation preparation.

It is the role of the school counselor to aid teachers and

administrators in creating instructional programs that incorporate
these four domains.

Educational Planning for all Students

• Educational planning must be designed to fit the needs

of ALL students.

• Curriculum needs to be adaptive to adapt to the needs of

both the gifted and the disadvantaged.

• Counselors must advocate for their students.

• School counselors monitor the placement of students

into appropriate programs.

Lifelong Learning

Most people do not think about learning as a lifelong process. Ways

to promote lifelong learning are:

• Infuse affective education into daily instruction.

• Examine the need for terminal milestones (e.g. grade

promotion or a diploma).

• Invite parental participation.

• Show students how adults are always learning new

things.

• Show a link between career development and lifelong

learning.

Career Planning and Decision Making

A comprehensive school counseling program should incorporate the

following:

– Career development as a lifelong process.

– Gender and cultural stereotyping in career selection must be

eliminated.

– Higher education may not always lead to greater career

satisfaction.

– The present may not always predict the future.

– Career development is an interactive process.

Student Awareness

• Career exploratory activities are appropriate for all grade

levels.

• Decision-making and problem-solving skills can be

taught at all grade levels.

• Activities should be grade appropriate.

• Increasingly, as students advance through the grades,

assessment should be used to assist students in the self-
awareness process.

• Computer programs have become increasingly important

and a number of programs are used to assist students in
career exploration.

• Field trips to places of interest.
• Books, movies, that explore different career options.

Middle School
• Design career classes to assist with exploration.
• Field trips to places of interest.

Decision Making

• Decision making is a learned skill and should be a

component of every student’s educational program.

• Counselors can use a decision-making theory or model

to help design their approach.

• Group sessions facilitate learning and skill development.

• Counselors should read the current literature to make

sure they are using the best models in their approach.

• Methods and approaches that are restrictive hinder

student choices.
