Lion King
STORYBOARD
The storyboard for lion king is very detailed as it’s a animated film anyway which is basically
loads of different frames drawn onto a board and shown in order to make a sequence. This
storyboard made is just a brief of what the scene is going to include. The storyboard to the right
has less detail which would probably just be the early stages to the film. The story to lion king
was made by multiply people so these people most likely made the storyboards: Chris Sanders,
Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, Brenda Chapman and lots of other people.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Plasticine is frequently used when making a animation and using plasticine comes with some
risks like dropping the plasticine on the floor- if this happens you would need to cover it with a
sheet and clean it up immediately to prevent it being trodden into carpet. Another small risk
with plasticine is getting it into your eyes so when modelling you would need to wear goggles
but if it get into your eyes seek medical attention and use eye wash.
Using all the expensive equipment for making an animated film comes with a risk of damaging
equipment, the way from preventing damaging this equipment is by placing it into a sensible
position when its not being used and turn off any equipment not being used so that nothing
gets overheated. If any equipment is damaged though it would have to be reported to the
manager of the section of department so that it can be replaced or fixed.
The biggest risk is slippages as lots of people would be working at once in a small
environment with long hours, to prevent slippages it would be better to keep any drinks away
from the corners of tables and to make sure the floor is always dry and no plasticine or
equipment isn't left on the floor.
SCRIPT
A scipt is essential to a film as it’s the bases to the diologue and if it is poor the film wwont be
good so its key for a Disney to hire a proffesional script writer for the job.The script writers for
lion king was scripted by Linda Woolverton, Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts. Lion king
was the first film Disney animated feature a film which is a original story rather than based on
an already existing work. The writers of the film said that lion king was inspired by the lives of
Joseph and Moses- from the bible- as well as William Shakespeare’s theatre play “Hamlet”
LOCATION RECCE
The location recce develops the animators imagination into a real life set, this is great for the
animators as they can link it to another location and they don’t have to make up the set just re
create it. On November 1991 Disney sent a team of animators to Hells Gate National Park in
Kenya- west Africa for 2 weeks (6 animators went on the trip to take some notes on the
surroundings). The animators were sent to bring back research for the film to use locations in
the animation. Most of the landscapes in the finished movie are based on this park, but one of
the main locations in the film (Pride Rock) was a creation of the animators imagination so its
not a real place you could visit. Disney done this so that it would be the perfect scene in the
film to use.
EQUIPMENT
Disney are one of the best animation companies with some of the most unique and best
equipment which costs hundreds of thousands.Disney use computer software like Ptex which
is a texture mapping system developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios for production-
quality rendering. Another software used is SeExpr is a simple expression language that we
use to provide artistic control and customization to our core software. For modelling Disney
uses Autodesk Maya. For sculpting they use Pixologic Zbrush. For visual effects Pixar and
Disney use Side Effects Houdini. Disney Pixar has their own proprietary program; Presto,
which they use for animation. All of these software are owned by Walt Disney but you could
subscribe to use these software's, Disney's crew is very experienced which is why their films
look as good as they do.
