CHAPTER 8

CONCRETE PAVEMENT
Straight Edge Testing and Surface Correction
-the straight edge test is used to a determine floor flatness
-the surface of the concrete is tested with 3.00 long straight
edge
Final Finish
1. If the surface texture is broom-finished,it shoulld be
applied when water is dissapeared. The broom should
be done in the center to the edge of the pavement

2. Brooming should be completed before the concrete is

in such conditions
3. If the texture is belt-surface,after the straight edging
and water sheen dissapeared and become non
plastic, the surface belted 2 ply canvas belt not less
than 20 mm.
4. If the texture is drag-finished,use a drag consist of a
seanless strip of damp burlap which will produce
uniform gritty texture
8-19 CURING
(curing is the process of special care taken to maintain conditions
of hydration of cement and matetrials in concrete)

-the entire surface of the newly placed concrete is CURED in

accordance
1. Cotton and Burlaps Mats
2. Water proof paper
3. Straw curing
4. By impervious membrane method
5. By use of white polyethene sheet
1.The use of Cotton and Burlaps Mats
- PAVEMENT SURFACE COVERED WITH MATS THROUGHLY
SATURATED WITH WATER
- Maintain fully wet within 72 hrs curing period
2.The use of Water proof paper
-the top and sides of pavement is covered with this PAPER.
And same as the cotton burlap mats it should be maintain 72
hrs curing period
-at least 45 cm units to be lapped

3.Straw Curing

- this process is used after the pavement cured with cotton

mats and the pavemetnt is throughly wetted.
- THE STRAW IS MEASURED AT LEAST 20cm AFTER SATURATION
OF WATER TO LAST FOR 72 HRS
4.Impervious Membrane Method
- The entire surface of pavement is
sprayed with white pigments curing
compound.

5.By the use of white polyethylene method

- The top surface and sides of the pavement is entirely
covered with this sheet
- At least 45cm like the water proof paper.
8-20 REMOVALS OF FORMS
-Concrete pavement shall remain in place
undisturbed within 24 hrs after pouring
1. Crowbars are used in removing forms
2. In case the concrete slab is spalled off it
should be repaired with fresh mortar
mixture
3. Major honeycombed areas wil be
considered defective work to be
removed
8-21 CONCRETING BY THE SLIP-FORM
METHOD
-Slip form- relies on the quick settling properties of concrete

The Grade-after the grade have been placed and compacted on the
required density ,the areas to support the paving machine is to cut
the proper elevation.
Placing of concrete- the concrete is deposited inside the form using an
approved SLIP FORM PAVER designed to spread, consolidate and
float finish the freshly placed in one complete pass of the machine.
Protection Against Rain
-to protect the concrete pavement from rain, the contractor must have
materials for protection at all times consisting standard of metals forms
or(plunks thickness of not less than 50mm).
-covering materials such as cotton mats, curing paper or plastic sheeting

Slip forming is a contruction method in which concrete is

poured into continuously moving form.
Tolerance and pavement thickness
The thickness of the pavement will be determined by measuring the
core from the completed pavement in accordance with AASHTO
T148 requirement
1. The completed pavement wi be accepted on a lot basis A
considered as 1000 linear meters of pavement slab when single
traffic lane is poured or 500 when two lanes
2. Each slab will have its length at least ½ of the normal lot length. If it
is shorter than ½ of the normal length it should be included in the
previous lot.
Pavement thickness
Uniform thickness as lannesfor the average of each lot as defined:
1. In calculating the average thickness of the pavement by more than
5mm and less than the specified thickness by more more than 25
mm shoud not be included in the average.
2. When the average thickness is deficient, the contract unit price will
be adjusted in accordance to the thickness.
Opening to traffic
The project engineer will deicde when the pavement may br opened
to traffic. The road will not be opened until after test specimen’s
molded and cured in accordance have attained the mi nimum
strength requirement
