Introduction to the Topic
◦ In this very wide topic of saving the environment, today we will be defining
and looking at the impact of Climate change, global warming and carbon
footprints on the environment.
◦ We will also look at how science addresses global warming and ways that we
can reduce our carbon footprint to make a more efficient and safe world. The
effect of technology and science will show us how science addresses this
topic.

Climate Change
◦ What is climate change?
◦ Climate change is any significant long term change
over a long period of time in an
unexpected patterns, different to the earth’s average
by things like greenhouse gases and the burning of
fossil fuels.
◦ What effect is Climate change having?
◦ In Australia climate change will mean the increase
in rainfall or changes to rainfall pattern, higher air
temperature, ocean circulation wave pattern,
changes in Ph levels of ocean temperature and
surface temperature.
What is Enhanced Greenhouse Gases?

Enhanced In the atmosphere, greenhouse gases trap heat and make the

Greenhouses
Earth warmer. Water vapor, carbon dioxide,
methane and nitrous oxide are the gases with the most signific
ant impact on global warming. In addition

Gases ozone and chlorofluorocarbons are common greenhouse gases.

The effect of enhanced greenhouse gases on

the environment is very similar to global
warming and climate change and they all have
a very strong effect on the earth.
Global Warming
global warming simply means a gradual
increase in the overall temperature of the
earth's atmosphere through greenhouse
What is global warming? gases and pollutants that enter the
atmosphere causing changes in the
temperature.

Global warming is having many diseases,

animals and plants to the prob effects on earth
whether it can be through infectious ability that
Australia will sink because of water levels rising.
In general global warming is causing hotter
temperatures. 2013,2014,2015 and 2016 are
recorded to be some of the hotter years ever
What effect is it having on and they are all very recent. Global warming
earth? also caused sea levels rising and oceans
acidifying and becoming warmer. This is
especially concerning since it effects the marine
live and coral. Some corals and marine can’t
stand the temperature or the acid in the water
currently, along side the amount of plastic in the
sea it has been some of the top leading causes
for the decrease of marine species left.
Carbon Footprint
◦ What is a Carbon footprint?
◦ A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide
released into the atmosphere as a result of human
activities. Each person has a different carbon footprint
according to different categories, for example things like
your electricity usage, water usage, car usage etc. You can
check your carbon footprint by trying a carbon footprint
calculator.
◦ In this diagram it looks at the effect of different
transportation and their effect on the environment. The
green foot represents the space per square meters
required per occupant. The black balloon represents the
amount of CO2 per person kilometre travelled
Scientists have addressed climate change many times
and have said that it is a real problem and one
hundred percent happening and that we need to

addressing On a positive note using science we have already

climate
made lots of progress to prevent and prepare for
climate change. We have invented things like electrical
cars, solar panels, energy efficient star ratings, wind

turbines and eco friendly technology.

According to the union of scientists they have fully

acknowledged the climate change topic and have
many articles regarding the topic and ways to take
actions. Some of the articles talk bout real life
examples and what could potentially be at stake
when we mean global warming. It is also regularly
updated and full of statistics. ( website in references)
Survey
◦ We can determine our individual carbon footprint by using online carbon
footprint calculators, I decided to investigate and I used this method to
create my own survey on kahoot and I surveyed some people in different
age groups
◦ Some questions I asked included:
◦ According to the results most people:
◦ Uses cars as their main transport
◦ Most people eat meat/dairy every other day
◦ Most people live in houses, made from bricks and don’t have solar panels
◦ Most people have 4-6 people in their houses
◦ Most people generate above average rubbish (mostly not recyclable)
◦ According to this it means that if everyone lived like this we would need 3
earths to survive. I think this is because all these simply actions add up and
if we all did this the world would not live for long. Things like having not
recyclable rubbish and using more cars definitely effects the earth’s life.
◦ There are many ways to reduce your carbon footprint for a healthier and
safer environment. Here are a few ways:
◦ Stop eating or eat less meat- To get a single pound of beef, it takes over
5,00 gallons of water
◦ Unplug your devices- It’s very simple, if you aren’t using your electronic
device unplug it.
◦ Use solar panels- This reduces electricity waste and saves you money How to reduce
◦ Drive less- try using your bike, public transport, walking or even
carpooling
◦ Don’t buy cheap clothing- some clothes that are marked for cheap money
your Carbon
like $4 are actually creating 15 million tones of textile waste a year.
◦ Eat organic- it encourages more local produces and less travel (imported)
footprint
food.
◦ Line-Dry your clothes- this will reduce electricity waste by not using
dryers
◦ Reducing plastic consumption- buying a metal straw instead of plastic and
bringing your own recyclable bags to shopping.
Why should we act now?
◦ It is crucial for us to act now before it is too late. By starting to save
earth now it won’t be too late. With all the new technology and
science we are developing it is possible, but using this technology
wisely will be our only option.
◦ Earth is our only current option for life. Without earth it will be
extremely hard for us to survive even on mars because it isn’t like
earth. Instead of looking at other options lets try to protect earth.
New science says land conservation must double by 2030 to prevent
dangerous warming. That means that we need to save half of earth
just so we can redeem the rest. The cost to conserve earth is
estimated to be $100 billion dollars this number will only increase if
we don’t act now. Without earth we have no home
