It has been a great experience and immense joy for us to bond with the children residing here in different homes. We would like to thank Birendra Baxla Sir for guiding us during the internship and solving all the queries. Interacting with the kids and understanding the problems underlying beneath, we hope to make a thorough project on this, providing constructive suggestions with a will to make children’s life better. TRAINEES OBJECTIVES The objectives of the trainees during the internship are: • To understand and implement the theories related to child development. • To display appropriate leadership skills. • To recognise the needs of children in the health care environment • To gain an understanding of the effects of stress and trauma on children and adolescents’ behaviour and development. • To understand the roles of child care professionals and to educate others on the role of Child life. • To gain knowledge of how to assess, plan, organise, implement and evaluate Child life interventions. PLANNED ACTIVITIES These were the activities that we planned on implementing in the homes. • Moral and social awareness • Basic Mathematics • Motivational Speech • Dance, Yoga • General Science • General knowledge (Quiz) • Games and sports activities • Painting, drawing • Spoken English, Extempore Speech ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN We proceeded according to our scheduled plans and were quite successful in holding and undertaking many activities. Due to the shortage of time and the half yearly exams going simultaneously, we had to cut down some activities, still we all had a great time. The things we successfully conducted were: • Teaching Mathematics: The maths exam was nearby and the children were tensed, so we conducted a class trying to cover some specific chapters, in which they are lacking behind. After that, a small test was taken, in which most of the students did well. It was fruitful. • Teaching Science: Understanding and learning science is often found to be uninteresting by these children. So we conducted classes and surprisingly, they took them very well. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN • Spoken English: It has been seen that many children are afraid to speak English boldly and hence get deprived of the fluency and self confidence. We showed them videos on different lessons of grammar and greetings. They loved it. • Dance: A 2-hour dance class was conducted. And surprisingly, they did very well and there were some exceptional good dancers among them. • Motivational speech: We gathered the children and gave speeches about life lessons, motivations, discipline, cleanliness and importance of education. • Sports: We played basketball with them and there are quite good players among them. • Moral and Social Awareness: Presentation was given on Child labour and the dangerous consequences on a child due to this social curse. MAJOR LEARNING OF THE INTERNS As an intern, it was our first time in an orphanage and the past few days were filled with many experiences. Some of them are • We got a first hand teaching experience. Teaching them various subjects, it boosted our vocabulary and self confidence. • The working of CWC and child line and how they operate in picking up a child to getting it registered. We learned various and detailed aspects of it. • We planned various activities and acted accordingly. Teamwork and leadership skills were enhanced during the process. • Through interaction with the kids, our communication and vocabulary skills were boosted and we had a great experience with them. • A child may have undergone some trauma or abuse during their upbringing, and thus interacting them with kindness and gentle attitude is the right way.
