Defining Succession Planning


A succession planning program is a deliberate effort by an organization to ensure the leadership continuity in key positions, retain and develop intellectual and knowledge capital for the future, and encourage individual advancement.

SP is important for several reasons
1.Provide increased opportunity for high potential HiPos 2.Identify replacement needs 3.Decide which worker can be terminated without damage to the organization

SP 5 Generations
The life cycle of SP:
1- the first generation : is a simple replacement plan for the CEO. So the target is the CEO only. 2- the second generation: is a simple replacement plan for the CEO and his or her immediate reports. 3. The third generation : is a SP program from middle managers, who are usually the direct reports of the senior executive team.

Job competence models


There are two kinds of job competence models
1.The threshold competencies that assess people need in order to get the job done. 2.The distinguished competencies the emotional competencies that describe the capabilities that set star performer apart from average ones.

Example
Anyone in HR field needs a high level of technical expertise simply to do their job at all; such expertise is a threshold competence. But the two competencies that carry most weight in making someone outstanding in that field are the drive to be employee champion
