Introduction to Human Resource Management

Importance of Human Factor

It is a matter of common knowledge that every business organization depends for its effective functioning not so much on its material or financial resources as on its pool of able and willing human resources.

This is the only resource which is able to produce an output greater than the input. This resource is animate, active and living. Human resource is most complex and unpredictable in its behaviour. There is no cook book formula to guide a manager how to motivate his workers. Each individual has his own distinct background. It is only this resource which appreciate in value with the passage of time.

The earliest roots of this branch of knowledge can be traced back to the 18th century to some of the writings of Robert Owen a successful textile manufacturer of Scotland. Owen believed that the volume and quality of a workers output were influenced by his total environment, i.e., by his conditions both on and off the job. Robert Owe is regarded as the Father of Personnel Management.

What Is a Human Resource? William R. Tracey, defines Human Resources as: "The people that staff and operate an organization"; as contrasted with the financial and material resources of an organization. Human Resources is also the organizational function that deals with the people and issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, and training. A Human Resource is a single person or employee within your organization.

Definition of HRM

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organization that focuses on recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the organization. Human Resource Management can also be performed by line managers.

Human Resource Management is the organizational function that deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, organization development, safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration, and training.

Administrative activities associated with human resource planning, recruitment, selection, orientation, training, appraisal, motivation, remuneration, etc. HRM aims at developing people through work.

The HRM function is concerned with the procurement, development, compensation, integration and maintenance of the HR of an organization for the purpose of contributing towards the accomplishment of the organizations major goals and objectives. Therefore HRM is the planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the performance of those operative functions. - Edwin B. Flippo.

Manpower management effectively describes the processes of planning and directing the application, development and utilization of human resources in employment. - Dale Yoder.

HRM is that part of management process which is primarily concerned with the human constituents of an organization. - E. F. L. Brech.

HRM is that field of management which has to do with planning, organizing and controlling various operative activities of procuring, developing, maintaining and utilising a labour force in order that the objectives and interest for which the company is established are attained as effectively and economically as possible and the objectives and interests of all levels of personnel and community are served to the highest degree. - M.
