Sumitomo became the sole promoter of the company from January, 2009 with an equity stake of 54.96%. companys technical assistance agreement with Mazda had expired in October, 2004. In January 2011 ISUZU took a 4% equity stake in the company
Increasing focus on medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) segment. Just one product in the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) category, the Swaraj Mazda Prestige LT, an inter-city luxury coach, which was launched in July 2008. Japans Sumitomo Corporation, which recently upped its stake in the company to around 51% by buying Mahindra & Mahindras 14.04% stake, is keen to expand the M&HCV business. Isuzu Motors, Swaraj Mazdas technical partner, will provide the gearboxes and engines for these vehicles, which will be sold under the Isuzu brand name. Increasing access to cheaper finance is also one of the root causes of CVs future opportunity. More than 90 per cent of the CV purchase is on credit. The company faced challenges mostly from its competitors, those of which are well established themselves in CVs market segment. In SML ISUZU Buses and trucks company uses EURO-III standard engine, whereas major competitors like TATA, EICHER uses EURO-IV standards. The SML ISUZU is going to introduce SEMI LOW FLOOR BUS, SML WIDER BUS and in HVC to compete with Volvo India they will introduce ISUZU LT-134 C, ISUZU NQR BUS and IS-12B BUS. To compete with Eicher, they will introduce IS-12T TRUCK, IS-16T TRUCK.
