Conflict management
Definition :
Conflict is a process in which an effort is purposefully made by one person or unit to block another that results in frustrating the attainment of others goals or the furthering of his or her interest.

Conflict is a process which suggests that it contains some activities leading to certain end result. Conflict occurs when two or more parties pursue mutually exclusive goals, values , or events . Since these goals , values or events are incompatible , these can be achieved by one party only at the cost of the other. Similarly , conflicting goals may also exit before an individual and he may face conflicting situation as he can pursue only one goal at the cost of the other.

Conflict refers to deliberate behavior . Conflict leads to disruption or impairing the work of organization . Conflict is the function of opposite views held by the parties to dispute .

Goal conflict : it occurs at individual level when an individual faces the problem of choosing among two or more goals which are mutually competing in some way . There are three alternatives; Approach Approach conflict : this is arise when a person faces the problem of selecting among two or more equally attractive goal which are mutually he exclusive . Conflict arises in the mind of the person because he can choose only one alternative at the cost of the other equally positive alternative.

Approach-Avoidance conflict : this conflict arises when a person has an alternative which has both positive and negative aspects, ex: a person gets job opportunity but at a place which he does not like . Therefore , he feels a conflict as he has got a job ( positive aspect) but does not like the place of the job ( negative aspect). Avoidance-Avoidance conflict : when a person has to choose between two mutually exclusive goals, each of which possesses equally negative aspect. In such a case , unless another alternative is available , the conflict remains unresolved. Ex: a person may not like his present job but the alternative of leaving and looking for another job may be equally unattractive.

Role conflict : a role is a set of expectations people have about the behavior of a person in a position. Role conflict occurs when ex a role are expectation of a role are materially different or opposite from the behaviour anticipated by the person in that role. Mutually exclusive expectations may arise from a persons behaviour in four way : 1. When a person is asked to do a job for which he is not capable of doing or time and resource are not just sufficient to do the job ;

2. When the person is asked to do the job which does not fit with his own values system, 3. When the person receives role from different source but these source prescribe different behaviour, 4. When the person holds two or more roles and their expectations are different.

Role ambiguity : it occurs when an individual is not clear regarding his job duties and responsibilities . As a result , he experience difficulties in deciding the actual expectations from his role . Organizational position : it also affect the role ambiguity and consequently role conflict . This happens because there are different expectation from a position ; each individual or group of individual has particular expectation which may not be compatible .

Personal characteristics : it may also arise because of personal characteristics . Certain personality characteristics are more prone to experience role conflict
