APWH DBQ

WHY?
The College Board uses the Document Based Question to assess your ability to analyze primary documents, evaluate them and use them appropriately to answer a given historical question.

Write an essay that: Has a relevant thesis and supports that thesis with evidence from the documents. Uses all of the documents. Analyzes the documents by grouping them in as many ways as possible. Does not simply summarize the documents individually. Takes into account the sources of the documents and analyzes the authors point of view. Explains the need for at least one additional document.

You may refer to relevant historical information not mentioned in the documents.

It is easy! But YOU MUST DO YOUR PRE-WRITING! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Read the question. Read and summarize the documents. Consider what else you know Organize your ideas Write your thesis Additional type of document

(1) Read the question carefully.

Consider each word to make sure you understand EXACTLY what the question is asking. You must answer the question, not what you would like to answer!

(2) Read and summarize the documents.

A system used to assess the credibility of an AUTHOR
In AP World History students practice a method to look for the credibility of authors They search for the Point of View of the author or speaker POV can be determined from evaluating SOAPS.

(3) Consider what else you know What do you know about the time periods indicated in the Rome and Han? Are you familiar with any of the people?

(4) Organize your ideas How can you organize the evidence? What is the best approach to take for organizing the essay? (there isnt only ONE way) This is referred to as grouping the documents

Prompt: Use the documents to explain the importance of technological innovation.

Simple thesis example:

Group #1

The purpose and significance of the Homecoming dance in the life of Lamar High School was to make money to get the class out of debt, to have students look nice, and have all students enjoy themselves while socializing and dancing, with opinions varying based on role at the school.
Group #3

Do NOT use: I They We You Us Stuff The document says repeatedly eg: using docs & POV: Ms. Mulet, the senior class sponsor, seems to believe that making a profit is the purpose of the homecoming dance (doc. 5). As class sponsor, she is especially concerned that the debt be taken care of since she is ultimately responsible for the club finances.

You are not to just summarize the documents. No quotes explain and analyze You are to use the documents to support the thesis. This will require you to use the analysis you have already begun in your chart and analyzing the source.

You MUST have at least 2 documents in each grouping No more than 3 groups Use ALL documents Analyze POV as much as possible

SITUATION DESCRIPTION:
The annual Lamar Redskins versus Bellaire Cardinals football game was played Friday night. Due to family commitments I was unable to attend the game. The game was decided when Ryan Mole caught a touchdown pass on the last play of the 4th quarter giving Lamar a 14-10 victory. Monday morning when I arrived at school "everyone" was talking about the "catch" and the victory. What I want to know is what REALLY happened and just how great of a play this catch actually was.

Throughout the day I spoke to the following people in an attempt to obtain the truth. As I review each source I must constantly ask myself what is the validity of each person's comment and what is their particular expertise in the area of high school football.

Tom Robard, Newspaper Reporter, The Houston Chronicle The annual Lamar-Bellaire football game ended in dramatic fashion when Ryan Mole caught the game winning touchdown pass as time expired. Mole made a leaping catch and landed safely in the end zone capping an improbable come from behind win for the Redskins. (Note: most high school game results are phoned into the newspaper sports desk)
