RECAP

In the previous topic we have studied about

• Principle, construction and working of Zirconia gas
analyser.
• Now we are going to study about Electrochemical gas
anlayser.

AEI-603.23 3
• Electro chemical gas analyzer consists of a galvanic cell
with a metal anode and a hollow carbon cathode with the
major part of its being insulated.

• The pair of electrodes is then immersed in an electrolyte

with high hydrogen ion concentration.

• Consists savants cell

• Hollow Carbon

• Metal Anode

ELECTOCHEMICAL CELL

AEI-603.23 5
• When current is drawn from the cell, hydrogen ions flow
to the cathode and polarize it.

• In the absence of a depolarizer like oxygen current flow

stops.

• If a gas sample containing oxygen is sent through the

hollow of the carbon cathode, the gas will diffuse through
it and oxygen reacts directly through peroxide stage with
hydrogen for depolarization.

AEI-603.23 6
• Maintaining the flow and pressure constant, the
polarization and the current flow can be made
directly proportional to the cell temperature and
this is maintained constant by a controlled bath.

• The sample is also allowed to acquire this

temperature before it passes through the bore of
the cathode.

AEI-603.23 7
• Flow is maintained at 75cc/min.
• Accuracy is within ±5%.
• For different electrolytes separate calibration is
necessary.
