Name : P. SRINIVAS,
Designation : Lecturer
Branch : Electronics & Communication Engg.
Institute : GPW, Srikakulam, Srikakulam Dist.
Year/Semester : VI Semester
Subject : Analytical Instrumentation
Subject Cod : AEI-603
Topic : Pollution Analysers
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub Topic : Monitoring of Sulphur Dioxide
Teaching Aids : Diagrams
AEI 603.43 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to know about

• Monitoring of Sulphur dioxide

• Methods of monitoring SO2
• Colorimetry
• Conductivity meter

AEI 603.43 2
Methods of monitoring of sulphur dioxide

• Colorimetry

• Conductivitymetry

• Gas chromatography

• Coulometry

• Flame-photometric Detector

AEI 603.43 3
Basic principle

• A known volume of air is passed through an aqueous

solution, which contains reagents that absorb SO2

and produce a colour substance

AEI 603.43 4
Description of Colorimetry Analysis

• Colorimetry method works on the Beer’s Law

• The air to be analysed is passed through an aqueous solution

• Tetrachloromercurate used as an aqueous solution

• The SO2 in the sample air reacts with mercuric salt to forms a

Sulphatometric compound.

AEI 603.43 5
Photo Electric colorimeter

AEI 603.43 6
Colorimetry Analysis

•It is again further treated with acid bleached para rosehiline

and Formaldehyde Which would result in a red-purpled
colour compound
• The colour intensity is proportional to the presence of SO2
in the air sample

AEI 603.43 7
Advantages

• Simplicity

• High sensitivity

• Free from iterference from H2SO4,SO3,NH3

• Good specificity

AEI 603.43 8
Measurement of SO2 using conductmetry

PRINCIPLE: Measurement of So2 using Conductivity metry

is based on the principle of change of conductivity of a

solution due to presence of SO2 in the air to be analysed

AEI 603.43 9
Description of conductivitimetry method

• The sample to be analyzed is bubbled through a solution

• The solution consists of sulphuric acid and hydrogen

peroxide

• The change in electrical conductivity takes place due to the

formation of sulphuric acid by oxidation of the SO2

• The change of electrical conductivity of the solution is

proportional to SO2
AEI 603.43 10
Arrangement for measurement of SO2
using conductivitimetry

AEI 603.43 11
Conductometer

AEI 603.43 12
Summary
In this period, you have learnt about

SO2 monitoring methods:

Colorimetry,Conductivitymetry,Gas Chromatography,
coulometry, and flame-phtometric detector

Colorimetry: It is simple, high sensitivity and good

specificvity

Conductivitymetry: The sample air is analyzed based on

the change of conductivity of the aqueous solution
