AEI603.45 1
Objectives

• On completion of this period, you would be

able to know :
Monitoring of Nitrogen Dioxide
• Types of NO2 monitoring method
• Chemilominescence
• CO laser

AEI603.45 2
Methods of monitoring of Nitrogen
dioxide
• Colorimetry
• Chemiluminescence
• Use of CO laser
• Laser opto-acoustic spectroscopy

AEI603.45 3
Basic principle
• The principle is based on change of colour if a absorbing
solution when sample of air consists Nitrogen dioxide through
the solution

AEI603.45 4
Description of Colorimetry Analysis
• Colorimetry method works on the Beer’s Law
• A sample of air containg Nitrogen dioxide is passed
into an evacuated flask
• The flask contain a solution of H2O2 in sulphric acid
• The Nitrogen dioxide in the sample , converted into
Nitric oxide

AEI603.45 5
Description of Colorimetry Analysis

• The Nitric oxide is further reacts with phenol

disulphonic Acid to produce a Yellow colour
•The intensity of yellow colour is proportional to
Nitrogen dioxide Present in the sample if air
• The intensity of colour is measured colorimetrically

AEI603.45 6
Advantages

•Simplicity
•High sensitivity
•Free from iterference from H2SO4,SO3,NH3
•Good specificity

AEI603.45 7
Basic principle

•The phenomenon of emission of radiation from

chemi-excited species is known as
Chemiluminescence,

AEI603.45 8

Montiring of Nitrogen dioxide

AEI603.45 10
Description of Monitoring of Nitrogen
dioxide using CO laser
•CO laser generates continuous laser beam
•It is dc excited
•The wavelength of laser beam is 5.03μm
•The absorption cell(sample) is made of Pyrex
•It is evacuated to a low pressure
•It is wounded with a coil and the coil is excited
with a current of 1A(50Hz-150Hz)
AEI603.45 11
Description of Monitoring of Nitrogen
dioxide using CO laser
•It produces a varying magnetic field
•Now interactions between both and dc and ac
magnetic fields and produces a audio frequency
magnetic filed
•This signal is given to the Infrared detector
•The detector output is given to the lock-in
amplifier
•The output signal of amplifier is proportional to
density of Nitrogen dioxide present in the sample
AEI603.45 12
Summary

•Nitrogen dioxide monitoring methods:

Colorimetric, Chemiluminescence, Use of laser and
Laser opto-acoustic spectroscopy

•Chemiluminescence:
The phenomenon of emission of radiation from
chemi-excited species is known as
chemiluminescence
•CO laser
