AEI603.50 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to know :
• Role of electrostatic precipitation in pollution
control

AEI603.50 2
Control of Air Pollution

•One method of control of air pollution is that, to

reduce or Prevent the formation of the pollutants

at the source itself

AEI603.50 3
Methods of air pollution control

1) Reduction of contaminants from the source

2) Zoning of Industries
3) Growing more Trees

AEI603.50 4

Electrostatic precipitator

AEI603.50 7
Working of Electrostatic precipitator

AEI603.50 8
Working of Electrostatic precipitator
• The electrostatic precipitator is mainly
consisting of a a long cylindrical tube
• It containing an inlet into which the smoke or
dirty gas enters into it from the chimney and an
outlet through Which purified smoke goes out.
• It is connected to high voltage battery as
shown in the diagram

AEI603.50 9
Working of Electrostatic precipitator
• Smoke is a colloidal solution of negatively charged
carbon particles in air
• The smoke is sent through Cottrell's smoke
precipitator provided with a knob maintained to a very
high potential of + 80,000 volts or more.
• Under the influence of strong electric field, the smoke
particles get removed of their negative charge.

AEI603.50 10
Working of Electrostatic precipitator
• As a result, the smoke particles precipitate
out and settle at the bottom of the chamber
itself and only hot dust free gases go out
through the chimney.
