Subject Code : AEI- 603
Topic : Computer Applications in
Medicine
Duration : 50mts
Sub Topic : Computer assisted Medical
Imaging

AEI603.52 1
OBJECTIVES
On completion of this period, you would be able to
know …

• Computer assisted X-ray Tomography (CT)

• NMR Imaging (Neugmatography)

AEI603.52 2
COMPUTER ASSSISTED MEDICAL
IMAGING
• Nuclear medicine was the first clinical discipline to
use computers in medical imaging

• Computer is used to supplement human performance

to store large amount of data and carry out functions
that can not be accomplished by human brain .

Computer Results

AEI603.52 5
COMPUTER ASSISTED X- RAY
TOMOGRAPHY

• The computed CT consists of two sequential

processes.
• First the absorption data of the beam of X-rays with
in a single cross sectional plane must be acquired.
• Second, those data must be used as input to a
computer which calculates about 90,000 attenuation
coefficients and achieves image reconstruction by a
mathematical technique called “filtered back-
projection”
AEI603.52 6
COMPUTER ASSISTED X- RAY
TOMOGRAPHY

• The fourth generation of CT scanners can achieve this

in one second, in a one millimeter of human body.

• The spatial resolution is 1-2 mm on a scale of 2000

levels of attenuation

AEI603.52 7
COMPUTER ASSISTED X- RAY
TOMOGRAPHY

• Computerized emission tomography, either with a

single photon or positron uses the same mathematical
technique of filtered back projection to reconstruct on
image of distribution of radio activity in an organ

• Diagnosis of mental disorders is possible by above

technology

AEI603.52 8
NMR IMAGING (NEUGMATOGRAPHY)

• NMR imaging (Neugmatography) is based on the

conversion of proton density and T1 +T2 relaxation
signals by Fourier transformation and Radon
transformation in to images.

• Electronically it is possible to achieve image

reconstruction in multiple planes.

AEI603.52 9
NMR IMAGING (NEUGMATOGRAPHY)

• NMR images provide greater contrast between the

grey and white matter of the brain compared to the
X-ray or CT.

• It gives the information about tissue chemistry in

the living body ,which will help in differentiation of a
normal tissue from cancerous tissue
