Subject Code : AEI- 603
Topic : Computer Applications in Medicine
Duration : 50mts
Sub Topic : Computerized aid to the physically

handicapped
AEI-603.53 1
Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be
able to know …

• Computerized aid for the Blind

• Computerized aid for the Deaf

AEI-603.53 2
Computerized aid to the Blind

• The Optacon is a direct translation device.

• It converts optical image of a printed character in a page of

a book to a vibrating, tactile facsimile.

• Electrical out put signals from the sensor array are

processed in a simple computer system.

OPTICON

AEI-603.53 4
Contd…

• A blind reader with his finger tips in a tactile pad can feel
the tactile facsimile, like the Braille symbols.

• Graphics can also be communicated to the blind

students by means of a computer .

Optical Sensor with Tactile Pad for Blind
Students

AEI-603.53 8
• Each student is provided with an optical sensor linked to
a vibrator.

• When the blind student scrolls the optical sensor over

the monitor screen, a tactile vibration is felt at illuminated
point on the monitor screen.

AEI-603.53 9
• A globule of modeling clay is stuck on to the monitor
screen at each point where a vibration is felt.
• Thus the diagram is traced with globules of modelling
clay.
• The blind student can then feel the diagram’s shape by
passing his fingers over the globules.
• Later on the globules may be removed, by wiping them
off, to make the monitor ready for reading another
diagram.

AEI-603.53 10
Computerized Aid for the Deaf

• An auditory prosthesis is now available.

• It is based on electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve.

• It is used in cases where the transduction machinery of

the cochlea is totally defective.
