AEI-603.59 1
OBJECTIVES
On completion of this topic student will be able to
know …

• Preventive measures to reduce shock hazards

• Maintaining safe patient electrical environment

AEI-603.59 2
RECAP

• Computer applications in patient monitoring

• Computer applications in Patient management
• Computer applications in Hospital administration
• Patient safety
• Microshock
• Macroshock

AEI-603.59 3
PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO REDUCE
SHOCK HAZARDS

• To protect against shock, two general techniques

used are

3. Grounding

• Isolation

AEI-603.59 4
GROUNDING

• To shield the patient from all the sources of electrical

shock, it is best to connect to one common point
• All the nearby metal surfaces and all electronic
devices to which the patient is to be attached.
• This point is known as Equipotential patient
reference (EPR)
• which is connected to hospital grounding system.

AEI-603.59 5
USE OF ISOLATION TRANSFORMER
&GROUNDING

AEI-603.59 6
ISOLATION

• The isolation is done with the help of Isolation

transformer.

• Either line A or line B can be short circuited to

ground without any current flowing through the short
connection

AEI-603.59 7
Maintaining safe patient electrical
environment

• Use only three wire power cable

• Supply all electrical equipment with in 5 m of the

patient from a single blank of power points that have
grounded terminals.

AEI-603.59 8
Maintaining safe patient electrical
environment

• Do not use any electrical outlets in the vicinity of the

patient.

• Supply the power points from a power line isolation

transformer with ground –fault monitors.

AEI-603.59 9
Maintaining safe patient electrical
environment
• Check the power cords for signs of damage and
ground continuity.

• Use monitoring equipment with isolated inputs

AEI-603.59 10
Maintaining safe patient electrical
environment

• With all the equipment turned on, measure the

potential between the common ground
• And all conductive surfaces within 5 m of patient
• No surfaces should be more than 5 mV from the
ground.

AEI-603.59 11
