AEI-603.60 1
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this period, you would be able to
know

• Earth free patient monitoring

• standards

AEI-603.60 2
RECAP

In the previous class we have studied about

• Patient safety
• Microshock
• Macroshock
• Preventive measures to reduce the shock hazards
• Maintaining the safe patient electrical environment

AEI-603.60 3
EARTH FREE PATIENT MONITORING

• The use of single instrument with earthed patient circuits is

not particularly hazardous.
• The use of a number of devices connected simultaneously to
the same patient ,increases the technical problems of
protection.
• Therefore the use of earth-free equipment is becoming
necessary.

AEI-603.60 4
A BASIC EARTH-FREE INSTRUMENT

AEI-603.60 5
A BASIC EARTH-FREE INSTRUMENT

• The Earth-free instrument has a main transformer

with an earthed inter winding screen to provide the
major internal power supplies.

• Most of the circuits and all the exposed networks

are earthed.

AEI-603.60 6
STANDARDS

• On account of the major importance of electrical

safety factors in the design, production and usage of
medical equipment ,standards have been set for this
field.

AEI-603.60 7
STANDARDS

• One such standard is given by the Bureau of Indian

standards under ‘Medical Electrical Equipment part 1

• The standards state that the “Equipment shall be

designed that the risk of electrical shock in normal
use and in single fault condition is obviated as far as
possible”

AEI-603.60 8
A EARTH-FREE INSTRUMENT ASSEMBLY
FREE FROM MOST RISKS

AEI-603.60 9
Single fault conditions

• Interruption of a protective earth conductor

• Interruption of a one supply conductor

• Appearance of an external voltage on an F-type

applied part

AEI-603.60 10
Single fault conditions

• Appearance of an external voltage on a signal input

or on a signal output part

• Failure of an electrical component which might

cause a safety hazard

AEI-603.60 11
STANDARDS

Current type Normal Single fault

condition(mA) condition(mA)
Earth leakage 0.5 1.0
current(general)
Enclosure 0.1 0.5
leakage current
Patient leakage 0.01 0.05
current
