Institute : S.G.P.R Govt, Polytechnic, Kurnool
Semester : V Semester
Subject : Linear IC Applications
Subject code : AEI-505
Topic : Introduction To Op-amp
Duration : 100 min
Sub Topic : Operational Amplifier
Teaching Aids : Diagrams.

AEI505.1 to 2 1
Objectives:

Upon the completion of this topic the student will be

able to know about
• The requirements of op-amp.
• Explanation of differential amplifier

AEI505.1 to 2 2
Interaction/Discussion

• How to amplify difference of two signals?

• Difference amplifier.

AEI505.1 to 2 3
Operational amplifier:

• It is a high gain differential amplifier used to

amplify the difference between two input signals.
• It is abbreviated as op-amp.
• It is one of the widely used linear integrated
circuit.

AEI505.1 to 2 4
Circuit symbol:
• one inverting input terminal.
• one non- inverting input terminal.
• one output terminal.
• Two bias power supply terminals.

Fig:1 basic symbol

AEI505.1 to 2 5
Inverting terminal:
• A signal appearing (V1) is inverted at out put, by
changing its polarity

Non-inverting terminal:
• A signal appearing (V2) appears at out put with no
change in polarity

Output terminal:
Vo = A (V1- V2)
A = Amplification factor
AEI505.1 to 2 6
Requirement:
• To perform linear and nonlinear operations.
• To perform mathematical operations.
• To perform amplification.
• To perform A/D and D/A conversions etc.,

AEI505.1 to 2 7
Differential amplifier:

Fig:2, Simple block diagram

AEI505.1 to 2 8
Configurations:

• Dual-input, balanced output differential amplifier.

• Dual-input, unbalanced output differential amplifier:
• Single-input, balanced output differential amplifier.
• Single-input, unbalanced output differential amplifier.

AEI505.1 to 2 9
Differential amplifier

• It is input stage of op-amp.

• Amplifies the difference between the two

input signals
• Produces high voltage gain.
• It is direct coupled amplifier

AEI505.1 to 2 11
Operation

Out Of Phase Inputs:

• Results difference voltage between the two out put
terminals.

• Out put voltage is proportional to voltage gain of

transistors.

• Thus high gain for Differential mode signals .

AEI505.1 to 2 12
Operation contd..

In phase inputs:
• Results in opposite signals at collectors.

• Signals cancel each other.

• Thus no out put for common mode signals.
