Non inverting amplifier

Definition
In non inverting amplifier only one input is applied and
that is to the non inverting terminal. The inverting input
terminal is grounded.

AEI-505.18 6
• The figure shows the non inverting amplifier with
feedback

• Open loop voltage gain, A = v0÷vid

Where v0 = Output voltage

vid = v1-v2 = Differential input voltage

• Closed loop voltage gain = Af = v0÷vin

• Gain of the feedback circuit = B = vf÷v0

Wherevin = input voltage

vf = feedback voltage
AEI-505.18 7
Negative feedback

• The kirchoff’s voltage equation for the input loop

of the figure is
vid= vin – vf

• The op-amp always amplifies the difference input vid

Voltage gain :-
• Closed loop voltage gain (i.e. with feedback)

Af= v0 – vin → 1

v0= A(vin – vf)

AEI-505.18 8
Negative feedback

• From the figure,

v1 = vin

v2= vf = (R1v0) ÷ (R1+Rf) [since Rf>>R1]

 R1v0 
 v0  A  vin  
 R1  R f 
 
 R1 A 
v0  1    Avin
 R1  R f 
 
AEI-505.18 9
Negative feedback

Avin  R1  R f 
 v0   2
R1  R f  R1 A

v0
Af 
vin
Substituting v0 value in (2) in (1)

A  R1  R f 
 Af    3
R1  R f  R1 A

AEI-505.18 10
Negative feedback
Generally A is very large
 AR1   R1  R f 
R R
1 f  AR1   AR1
Then,
v0 A  R1  R f 
Af  
vin AR1

Rf
Af  1 
R1
AEI-505.18 11
Negative feedback

• The equation (3) shows that the gain of the non

inverting amplifier is determined by the ratio of the
resistances R1 & Rf

AEI-505.18 12
• The gain of the feedback circuit (B) is the ratio of vf &v0

• From the figure, the gain ‘B’ is

vf
B
v0
But v1  vin
R1v0
v2  v f  Q Ri  R1 
R1  R f
R1v0
B

B   1
 R1  R f 
AEI-505.18 13
v0 Rf
But , Af   1   2
vin R1
Comparing (1) and (2) we can say
1
A f    3
B
• This means that the gain of the feedback circuit is the
reciprocal of the closed loop voltage gain

• The exact value of Af

A  R1  R f 
Af 
R1  R f  AR1
AEI-505.18 14
• Multiplying and dividing with R1+Rf

A  R1  R f  R1  R f
Af  
R1  R f  AR1 R1  R f

A  R1  R f 
R1  R f

R1  R f AR1

R1  R f R1  R f
A
Af 
1  AB
AEI-505.18 15
A
Af 
1  AB

• Where Af = closed loop voltage gain

A = open loop voltage gain

B = gain of the feedback circuit

AB = loop gain

AEI-505.18 16
Input resistance with feedback
Figure shows the op-amp equivalent circuit
In this
Ri = input resistance (open loop) of op-amp

Rif = input resistance of the amplifier with feedback

Therefore resistance with feedback

vin vin
Rif  

AEI-505.18 17
vin Ri
Rif 
vid
However ,
v0 A
vid  & v0 
A 1  AB

vin Ri Avin Ri
 
v0 / A v0

AEI-505.18 18
Avin Ri

 A 
 vin
 1  AB 

Rif   1  AB  Ri

This means that the input resistance of the op-amp with

feedback is (1+AB) times without feedback

AEI-505.18 19
Output resistance
• Output resistance is the resistance determined
back in to the feedback amplifier from the output
terminal as shown in the figure
• It can be derived with Thevenin’s theorem for
dependent source
• Reduce vin to zero

• Apply external voltage v0

• Calculate the resultant currenti0

• Rof is defined as Rof = v0 ÷ i0 → (1)

AEI-505.18 20
Writing Kirchoff’s current equation at the output node

i0  ia  ib

   R f  R1  || R1   R0 & ia  ib

 ia  i0
By writing the Kirchoff’s voltage equation for the output loop

v0  Roi0  Avin  0

AEI-505.18 21
v0  Avin
i0 
R0

But , vid  v1  v2
 0  vf
vid  v f
 R1v0
vid    Bv0
R1  R f

AEI-505.18 22
v0  A   Bv0 
i0 
R0
v0  ABv0
i0 
R0

v0  1  AB 
i0    2
R0

AEI-505.18 23
Substituting (2) in (1) we get

v0
R0 f 
v0  1  AB 
R0
R0
R0 f 
 1  AB 
This shows that the output resistance of the non inverting

amplifier is 1/(1+AB) times the output resistance R0 of the

op-amp i.e. the output resistance at the op-amp is much

less than the output resistance without feedback
