Inverting amplifier

Definition

In inverting amplifier only one input is applied and

that is to the inverting terminal. The non inverting

input terminal is grounded.

Inverting amplifier

Circuit operation

The input signal Vin are applied to negative terminal

and positive terminal is grounded.

Closed loop voltage gain (Af)

The inverting amplifier can be obtained by writing

Kirchoff’s current equation at the input node

i2=if + ib →(1)

I B  0, because R i is very less

Then,

 The negative sign shows that the input and output

signals are out of phase by 1800

 It inverses the polarity

 For this it is called inverting amplifier

AEI-505.19 12
As A is very less AR1 >> R1 +Rf

This means

v0 Rf

This shows that the gain of the inverting amplifier is

set by selecting a ratio of feedback resistance Rf to the

input resistance Ri

Output Resistance

 The output resistance with feedback Rof is the

resistance measured at the output terminals of

the feedback amplifier

 Output resistance of the inverting amplifier can

be found by using Thevenin’s theorem

R0
Rof 
1  AB

AEI-505.19 17
Output Resistance

 Because the Rof of the inverting amplifier is

identical to non inverting amplifier

 Where R0 = output resistance of the op-amp

A = open loop voltage gain of the op-

amp

B = gain of the feedback circuit

AEI-505.19 18
Input, Output equations of
inverting amplifier

 v1 = 0V and v2 = vin

 v0 = -A .vin

 v0 = -(Rf vi) ÷ R1

 Gain = v0 ÷ vi =A=-Rf ÷ R1

AEI-505.19 19
Input, Output equations of
inverting amplifier

 The negative sign indicates that the output voltage is out

of phase with respect to input by180 degrees

 In inverting amplifier the input signal is amplified by a

gain A and also inverted at the output
